Sen is a native Bengali Hindu surname .The meaning of the Sanskrit word is "being a lord, master or leader" .[1]

The surname is commonly found in the Bengal region of the Indian subcontinent; namely Bangladesh & West Bengal, India mainly among Bengali Baidya and Kayastha[2] communities. The Sena kings of Bengal claimed themselves as Brahmakshatriya or Kshatriya in their own inscriptions.[3] The surname is also found among some other castes of Bengal like Suvarna Banik, Gandhabanik and Teli.[4][5]

The use of 'Sena' as a title is first found among the kings of a dynasty named as Vakataka[6][7][8] (Vidarbha). This surname is also used by Raja Dahir, the last king of Brahman dynasty of Sindh (Southeastern Pakistan) and then followed by Sena Dynasty (Eastern India and Bangladesh).
