Malda is a city in the Malda district in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is the headquarters of the district.
History[edit]
Malda district was formed in 1813. A joint magistrate and a deputy collector were placed at English Bazar. In 1859, a magistrate and a collector were posted at English Bazar. [1]
Geography[edit]
Administrative Set-up[edit]
Malda city consists of two municipalities: English Bazar and Old Malda.[2] English Bazar municipality was set-up in1868 and Old Malda municipality was set-up in 1869.[3][4]
General[edit]
English Bazar municipality has an area of 13.25 sq km.[3] Old Malda municipality has an area of 9.54 sq km.[4]
Old Malda lies near the confluence of the Mahananda and Kalindi rivers. In earlier days, the town was a flourishing river port.[5]
Demographics[edit]
As per the 2011 census, English Bazar urban agglomeration had a population of 313,681.[6]
Literacy rate for English Bazar UA was 82.05%.[6]
English Bazar UA consisted of English Bazar (Municipality), Old Malda (M), Chhatinamor (Census Town) and Sahapur (M).[6]

Transport[edit]
Malda railway division is one of the four railway divisions of Eastern Railway zone of Indian Railways. It was formed in 1975 with its headquarters in Malda.[7][8]
Malda Town railway station has 7 platforms and 106 trains halt at this station. 18 trains have this station as originating/ terminating station. It has an elevation of 31 m above sea level.[9] Gour Malda railway station has 2 platforms and 6 trains halt at this station.[10]Old Malda Junction railway station has 3 platforms and 14 trains halt at this station.[11] Malda Court railway station has 1 platform and 3 trains originate/terminate here.[12]
National Highway 12 (India) (NH 12), previously NH 34, is a National Highway in India which runs entirely in West Bengal. It runs from its junction with NH 27 at Dalkhola terminating at Bakkhali.[13]
