Malda is a city in the Malda district in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is the headquarters of the district.

History[edit]

Malda district was formed in 1813. A joint magistrate and a deputy collector were placed at English Bazar. In 1859, a magistrate and a collector were posted at English Bazar. [1]

Geography[edit]

Administrative Set-up[edit]

Malda city consists of two municipalities: English Bazar and Old Malda.[2] English Bazar municipality was set-up in1868 and Old Malda municipality was set-up in 1869.[3][4]

General[edit]

English Bazar municipality has an area of 13.25 sq km.[3] Old Malda municipality has an area of 9.54 sq km.[4]

Old Malda lies near the confluence of the Mahananda and Kalindi rivers. In earlier days, the town was a flourishing river port.[5]

Demographics[edit]

As per the 2011 census, English Bazar urban agglomeration had a population of 313,681.[6]

Literacy rate for English Bazar UA was 82.05%.[6]

English Bazar UA consisted of English Bazar (Municipality), Old Malda (M), Chhatinamor (Census Town) and Sahapur (M).[6]

Transport[edit]

Malda railway division is one of the four railway divisions of Eastern Railway zone of Indian Railways. It was formed in 1975 with its headquarters in Malda.[7][8]

Malda Town railway station has 7 platforms and 106 trains halt at this station. 18 trains have this station as originating/ terminating station. It has an elevation of 31 m above sea level.[9] Gour Malda railway station has 2 platforms and 6 trains halt at this station.[10]Old Malda Junction railway station has 3 platforms and 14 trains halt at this station.[11] Malda Court railway station has 1 platform and 3 trains originate/terminate here.[12]

National Highway 12 (India) (NH 12), previously NH 34, is a National Highway in India which runs entirely in West Bengal. It runs from its junction with NH 27 at Dalkhola terminating at Bakkhali.[13]

  • Malda Museum, established in 1937, initially within the campus of the Malda District Library, was shifted to its own building.[15]

Personalities[edit]

A. B. A. Ghani Khan Choudhury, a charismatic figure, represented the Malda (Lok Sabha constituency) eight times and was the Union Railway Minister.[16][17][18][19][20][21][22]

  • Malda Model Madrasa, established in 1915, is a Bengali-medium, coeducational institution having facilities for teaching from class V to class XII. It has a library with 2,845 books and 10 computers for teaching and learning purposes.[33]
  • Malda Chintamoni Chamatkar Girls' High School, established in 1932, is a Bengali medium, girls only institution having facilities for teaching from class V to class XII. It has a playground, a library with 516 books and 16 computers for teaching and learning purposes.[34]
  • Malda Kanya Shikshalay, established in 1939, is a Bengali medium, girls only institution having facilities from class V to class XII.[35]
  • Malda Town High School, established in 1949, is a Bengali medium, boys only institution having facilities for teaching from class V to class XII. It has a library and 20 computers for teaching and learning purposes.[36]
  • Malda U.C.B. Vidyalay, established in 1951, is a Bengali medium, boys only institution having facilities for teaching from class V to class XII. It has a playground and a library with 1,680 books.[37]
  • Jalalia Girls’ High School, established in 1952, is a Bengali medium, girls only institution having facilities for teaching from class V to class XII. It has a library with 1,120 books and 11 computers for teaching and learning purposes.[38]
  • Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Vidyamandir, established in 1952, is a Bengali medium, boys only institution having facilities for teaching from class V to class XII. It has a playground, a library with 608 books and 34 computers for teaching and learning.[39]
  • Malda Girls’ High School, established in 1962, is a Bengali medium, girls only institution having facilities for teaching from class V to class XII. It has a playground, a library with 2,025 books and 17 computers for teaching and learning purposes.[40]
  • Malda J.M.S. Hindi High School, established in 1966, is a Hindi medium, coeducational institute having facilities for teaching from class V to class XII. It has a library with 3,000 books and 10 computers for teaching and learning purposes.[41]
  • L.M.S.M. High School, established in 1966, is a Bengali medium, boys only institution having facilities for teaching from class V to class XII. It has a library with 4,285 books and 44 computers for teaching and learning purposes.[42]
  • Malda Bibhuti Bhusan High School, established in 1968, is a Bengali medium, boys only institution having facilities for teaching from class V to class XII. It has library with 1,300 books and 16 computers for teaching and learning purposes.[43]
  • Malda Railway High School, established in 1966, is a Bengali medium, coeducational institution having facilities for teaching from class V to class XII. It has library with 1,068 books and 35 computers for teaching and learning purposes.[44]
  • Maheshmati D.N.Saha Vidyabhaban, established in 1968, is a Bengali-medium, boys only institution having facilities for teaching from class V to class XII. It has a library and 10 computers for teaching and learning purposes.[45]
