Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology (TIET), formerly Thapar University, is a deemed-to-be-university, in Patiala, India. It was founded in 1956 by Karam Chand Thapar. The completed expansions included the new five-floor Nava Nalanda library, one six-floor computer complex consisting of labs and faculty areas and one six-floor lecture complex with lecture halls of capacity ranging from 200 students to 550 students each and activity rooms with a capacity of 200 students each.

In India, the university ranked 23rd among engineering colleges by India Today in 2020, and third among private engineering colleges by Outlook India in 2022.[4] The National Institutional Ranking Framework has ranked 20th among engineering institutions in 2023,[5] 22nd among universities[6] and 40th overall.[7]

Future expansions[edit]

The institute plans to set up two campuses over the next five years, one of them on a 14-acre (57,000 m2) campus near Chandigarh.[8]
