YSR district (formerly Kadapa or Cuddapaa) is one of 26 districts in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.
History[edit]
YSR district was one of the 13 new districts formed in 2022 , with its headquarters at Kadapa. The reorganisation of the districts increased the number of districts in Andhra Pradesh to 26. It has 3 revenue divisions - Jammalamadugu revenue division, Kadapa revenue division and Badvel revenue division.[1]
Kadapa district was renamed YSR district in 2010 after Yeduguri Sandinti Rajasekhara Reddy (8 July 1949 – 2 September 2009), who was chief minister of Andhra Pradesh for two terms. In a political career spanning 30 years, he never lost an election. He died in a helicopter accident.[2][3][4][5]
Geography[edit]
The total geographical area of the YSR district is 15,379 sq km. It is linked with the historically famous Dandakaranya of Ramayana fame. It is said that Rama, Sita and Lakshmana passed through the forests. The holy rivers Penna (Panakini), Papaghni, Chitravati, Mandavya flow through the area.[6]
Several hill ranges in the district which do not have continuity, the Vellikonda Hills, the Palakonda Hills, along with the Nallamalai, Lankamalai, Yerramali and their subsidiaries form the Kadapa system of the central part of the Eastern Ghats. The rivers passing through the district forms scenic valleys, that provide sustenance to a majority of the population. The main river passing through the district is the Penneru (Penna) and the Penneru basin is drained by the tributaries and sub tributaries of the Penneru such as the Kunderu (Kundu), Sagileru, Cheyyeru, Papaghni, Chitravati and others.[7]

YSR district has a total population of 20,60,654.[8]
YSR district is composed of 3 revenue divisions, 36 mandals, 557 s, 726 revenue Villages and 2,257 habitations.[9]

Economy[edit]
Land Utilisation and Agriculture[edit]
In the YSR district, forests cover is 500,961 hectares (32.62%) of the total area and the total cropped area is 354,724 hectares (23.10%). Out of the cropped area 49,402 hectares or 16.29% of the total area sown more than once. Dry deciduous predominate in the area. Both red ferruginous and black soils are found in the area but the latter soil superior for cultivation forms only 23.7% of the area. The average annual rainfall in the district is 696.6 mm, falling mostly in the monsoon months from around June to November. Agriculture is the primary occupation of the people. The major crops are paddy, groundnut, sunflower, cotton and betel leaves. Mango, papaya, banana, lemon and oranges are the main fruits. K.C.Canal and the Mylavaram Project on the Pennar River are the major irrigation facilities. Pincha Project, Lower Sagileru Project, Upper Sagileru Project, Annamay Project, Brahma Sagar Project and Pulivendula Branch Canal are minor projects.[11]
Industry[edit]
YSR district has 14 large and medium scale industries employing 19,480 persons. It has 171 small scale industries employing 2015 persons. The Rayalaseema Thermal Power Station is one of the major power stations in the state.[12][13]
Transport[edit]
Kadapa railway station is a station in the Guntakal railway division of the South Coast Railway. It has 3 platforms, 60 trains halt at this station and 4 trainsFile:Kadapa railway station.jpg originate from or terminate at this station. The station stands on a electrified double track.[14]
Sri Lankamalleswara Wildlife Sanctuary[edit]
Sri Lankamalleswara Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the Lankamalal hill rages about 30 km from Kudapa in Andhra Pradesh.[15]
Dry deciduous forest is found in the higher elevations of the sanctuary and there are scrub forest in the plains. It covers an area of 464.42 sq km. This sanctuary was declared mainly for the protection of the Critically endangered Jerdon’s Courser Rhinoptilus bitorquatus, other species of fauna seen in this sanctuary are: Leopard, Indian wild dog, sloth bear, chital, sambar, chinkara and wild boar. [16]

YSR district has 3,225 primary schools, 546 upper primary schools, 808 high schools, 161 junior colleges, 55 degree colleges, Yogi Verma offering PG courses in general education, 22 engineering colleges, 11 polytechnics, Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, 1 dental college, 1 homeopathic medical college and 1 veterinary college.[17]
