Tyrone Kirchengast

Dr. Tyrone Robert Kirchengast (born 19 January 1978) is an Australian academic and author specializing in criminal law and criminal justice. He is an Associate Professor in the University of Sydney Law School.[1] His career is marked by significant contributions to legal academia with several books focusing on the victim in criminal law and justice.[2][3][4][5][6][7] His main area of expertise is criminal trial reform,[8] with a strong focus on comparative criminal justice across Europe, Asia, and North and South America.[9]

Education and backgroundEdit

Tyrone Kirchengast graduated from Macquarie University with honours degrees in law and arts.[10] He holds a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the College of Law,[11] and was admitted as a Legal Practitioner of the Supreme Court of NSW in 2002.[12] He completed his doctorate in law at La Trobe University in 2004.[13]

Academic leadership and affiliationsEdit

From 2020 to 2022, Tyrone Kirchengast held the position of Associate Dean (Postgraduate Programs) at the University of Sydney Law School.[14] He is a member of the Sydney Institute of Criminology.[15] He is a Senior Visiting Research Fellow at UNSW Law and Justice.[16]

Tyrone Kirchengast is widely recognized as an international expert on crime victim rights and the enhancement of victims' access to justice.[17] His scholarly outputs include numerous publications, particularly focusing on the integration of victims within the adversarial criminal trial.[18] He currently serves as series co-editor for Palgrave Studies in Victims and Victimology.[19] He has given keynote and plenary addresses to victim rights and criminal law conferences in Chennai and Hyderabad, India, and lectured at the Induction Training Program for Judges, Tamil Nadu State Judicial Academy, Chennai, India, in early 2020.[20]

Academic CareerEdit

Tyrone Kirchengast’ s academic career has encompassed various institutions, including teaching criminal law and procedure at the University of New South Wales from 2009 to 2017.[21] Macquarie University from 2007 to 2008,[22] and the University of Newcastle from 2003 to 2006.[23] He was a visiting professor in the Faculty of Law, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Brazil, in 2017.[24]

Consultations and expert advisory rolesEdit

Throughout his career, Tyrone Kirchengast has lent his insights to critical roles, such as consulting for the Department of Justice, New South Wales,[25] and serving as an expert advisor to commissions of inquiry on crime victim rights, for the Victorian Law Reform Commission from 2012-2014.[26] He consulted for the Department of Justice, NSW, on the participation of victims of crime in NSW court processes, from 2012-2014.[27] His contributions have significantly influenced policy and practice regarding victim rights and criminal trial reform and his work is widely cited across law reform research, reports and frameworks, internationally.[28][29][30][31][32] He frequently appears in international media and on radio.[33]

Research and Comparative FocusEdit

Tyrone Kirchengast's research examines victim participation across the criminal trial process.[34] His work spans various topics, such as legal representation for victims of crime, restorative and therapeutic justice, compensation and restitution, criminalization and digital crime,[35] and the recognition of victim rights as human rights within international and domestic legal frameworks.[36] His research approach is comparative, exploring adversarial and inquisitorial court processes across diverse international and domestic legal systems.[37] This includes a keen interest in mixed and hybrid systems of justice found in Europe, Asia, and South America.[38]

TeachingEdit

At the University of Sydney Law School, Tyrone Kirchengast teaches across core courses including Civil and Criminal Procedure and Criminal Law.[39] Since 2012, he as offered an advanced elective course in Critical Victimology,[40] reflecting his commitment to advancing the understanding of crime victim rights and justice, and the need for criminal trial reform to better support victims of crime. Tyrone Kirchengast's contributions to legal academia, advocacy for crime victim rights, and dedication to the development of legal professionals, significantly underscore his teaching of criminal law and criminal justice.
