Twitch ( ) is a popular American live-streaming platform that focuses primarily on video games, including esports esports competitions. The service also features music broadcasts, creative content, and "in real life" streams. Operated by Twitch Interactive, a subsidiary of Amazon, Twitch was launched in June 2011 as a spin-off from the more general streaming site, Justin.tv.
Users can access content on Twitch either through live streams or video on demand. The games displayed on Twitch's homepage are curated based on viewer preferences and encompass various genres like real-time strategy, fighting, racing, and first-person shooter games.
Twitch quickly outgrew Justin.tv in popularity. By October 2013, it attracted 4.5 crore unique viewers, and by February 2014, it became the fourth-largest source of peak internet traffic in the United States. During this period, Justin.tv’s parent company rebranded itself as Twitch Interactive to reflect its new direction, leading to the shutdown of Justin.tv in August 2014. That same month, Amazon acquired Twitch for 97 crore US$, paving the way for integrations with Amazon Prime's subscription services.
By 2015, Twitch boasted over 10 crore monthly viewers. In 2017, it continued to be the top live-streaming service for gaming in the US, maintaining an edge over YouTube Gaming, which discontinued its standalone app in May 2019. As of February 2020, Twitch had 30 lakh monthly broadcasters and 1.5 crore daily active users, averaging 14 lakh concurrent viewers. By May 2018, the platform had more than 27,000 partnered channels. As of January 2025, Twitch ranked as the 30th most-visited website globally, with 23.46% of its traffic originating from the United States, followed by Russia (8.87%), [[Germany[] (7.08%), and France (6.26%). In late 2023, Twitch announced plans to cease operations in South Korea by 2024 due to the high costs associated with its network fee policy.
