Teddy is a 2021 Indian Tamil-language fantasy action film written and directed by Shakti Soundar Rajan. The film stars a teddy bear in the titular role as a special character, while Arya along with Sayyeshaa feature in the lead roles. Sathish, Sakshi Agarwal and Magizh Thirumeni play supporting roles in the film The music is composed by D. Imman and film is produced by K. E. Gnanavel Raja under his production banner Studio Green. It is the first Tamil film to use an Indian animation company to design a special animated character and the second motion-capture film in Tamil after Kochadaiiyaan (2014).[1][2] It was released worldwide on Hotstar on 12 March 2021.[3] It received generally mixed reviews, with praise for its performances and VFX, but criticism for its screenplay, logic and dialogues.

Plot[edit]

Template:PLOT Srividya, a college student helps a person who faced an accident, in return having her hand get hurt. She is sent to a hospital where she is given IV drugged to cause an artificially induced coma. Srividya waking up soon after, is given the medicine when her soul transfers to a teddy bear. On the other hand Shiva is a person with photographic memory and an OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) that makes him learn things faster. After his mother Lakshmi and his friend tell him to meet a Psychiatrist Doctor named Priya, he goes for a session. After the session, Shiva's mother tells him she is engaged, but now she rejected the marriage. One night, Shiva saves a teenager from a group of rowdies where Srividya sees him as the Teddy Bear and they meet the next day. Shiva first believes he is crazy but soon he understands that it's real. Srividya tells Shiva that she needs to see her boyfriend Rishi, and when Sri and Shiva see him with another girl, Srividya is heart broken. After Shiva and his friend take Srividya to her house, he sees Srividya's father Purushottaman trying to commit suicide, Shiva saves him. Srividya's mother requests him to find her. Shiva makes a promise to find their daughter. Srividya thanks Shiva for saving her father. Shiva Srividya think of the ways to find her body that was transferred from the hospital.

Shiva sends the Teddy (he also gave a phone to track her) as a parcel with a barcode from the hospital. Srividya is taken to Azerbaijan which was the final destination for the parcel with that particular barcode. Teddy using a phone of a beggar took a selfie in front of a restaurant and send to Shiva through Facebook. Shiva decided to go Azerbaijan, so he sold his shares for travel expenses. While traveling he met Karthik who had been working in Azerbaijan for three years. Karthik supported Shiva for finding Teddy in the surrounding of that restaurant in the selfie. Teddy spotted Shiva with the help of the beggar and made to believe the story told by Shiva. They decided to search Srividya in one of the brothel in that place. There Teddy found the same tattoo that she saw in the hands of the parcel deliverer ,in the hands of person there.

Using the clues that given by that person, Shiva realized about the huge Medical scam that is, they had kidnapped Srividya for her rare blood group live organs which used to cure the Billionaires. The main scammer is Dr.Varadharajan, who kidnapped hundreds of people like Srividya and drugged them to cause artificially induced coma and taking away their wanted live organs which worth a lot in their secret hospital in countryside. Shiva and Teddy found all these Medical Mafias and with the help of the police he legally solved the case. Shiva saved Srividya, she became conscious while the soul in the Teddy left. Srividya can't remember Shiva and his hard effort he made to save her. They came India in the same plane then Srividya met his parents with the tears of joy. Shiva was very upset and disappointed and came along with the Teddy.

One year later, Srividya started following Shiva and took photos of him, because of her some unknown feelings (love) on him . Shiva realized that feelings and they loved each other and got married and led a happy life. In the ending when Srividya sleeps on Shiva her soul again transfers into the teddy bear.

Production[edit]

The film was announced by director Shakti Soundar Rajan in March 2019 which also marked his fifth directorial venture and maiden collaboration with actor Arya.[4] The principal photography of the film commenced in May 2019.[5] Sakshi Agarwal was approached to play a supporting role after participating in the reality TV show Bigg Boss Tamil 3.[6]

Director Magizh Thirumeni who was known for his directorial Thadam was cast to play a supporting role which also marked his acting debut.[7][8] The theme of the film revolves around the special character Teddy Bear in animation which would appear for nearly 80 minutes of the film. The film was predominantly shot in Chennai and in a few locations across Europe.[9]

The shooting procedure of the film was wrapped up as of February 2020.[10] In June 2020, Thirumeni confirmed the film would proceed with a theatrical release, despite rumours that they were exploring an over-the-top media service release.[11]

The soundtrack of the film is composed by D. Imman, continuing his collaboration with the director for the third time after Miruthan (2016) and Tik Tik Tik (2018). The lyrics are written by Madhan Karky. The first single En Iniya Thanimaye which was sung by Sid Sriram was released on 14 February 2020 coinciding with the Valentine's Day.[12][13] Later the video song of "En Iniya Thanimaye" was released on 1 March 2021.[14]

Release[edit]

Teddy was scheduled to release on 24 April 2020 , but was called off due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The film released on Hotstar on 12 March 2021 worldwide.[3]

Baradwaj Rangan of Film Companion South wrote "Tamil cinema's high-concept king, Shakti Soundar Rajan, takes a tumble with this story about a giant talking bear."[15]
