Tangla is a town with an Urban Body of municipal board Tangla Municipal Board Consisting of New 10 Wards and 12 Revenue Village in what was Darrang district and is now Udalguri district in the Indian state of Assam. It was a prominent business place for jute, beetle nut, rice, etc. and a host of small scale industries and centre of culture in erstwhile Darrang district. Mangaldai-Bhooteachang Road passes through Tangla Town connecting numerous tea estates along the Indo-Bhutan Border. Tangla is famous for its weekly markets which is held on every Tuesday and Friday where vendors from the town itself and far flung areas come to trade in their vegetables, garments, livestock, etc. Tangla is an educational hub in the entire Udalguri district. Students come from many places to study in Tangla.

Demographics[edit]

As of 2011 India census,[1] Tangla town is divided into 4 wards for which a nominated body is there. The Tangla Municipal Board has population of 17,183 of which 8,883 are males while 8,300 are females as per report released by Census India 2011. Population of Children with age of 0-6 is 1593 which is 9.27% of total population of Tangla (TC). In Tangla, Female Sex Ratio is of 934 against state average of 958. Moreover, Child Sex Ratio in Tangla is around 957 compared to Assam state average of 962. Literacy rate of Tangla city is 86.16% higher than state average of 72.19%. In Tangla, Male literacy is around 89.79% while female literacy rate is 82.28%. Tangla Town Committee has total administration over 3,872 houses to which it supplies basic amenities like water and sewerage. It is also authorized to build roads within the Municipal Board limits and impose taxes on properties coming under its jurisdiction. Tangla mainly consists of a heterogeneous population with 12.45% of Schedule Caste (SC) while Schedule Tribe (ST) consists of merely 9.62% of the total population. Tangla town was also adjudged with the Swachh City Award for being the Fastest moving city in Northeast zone (under population category below 1 lakh) in Swachh Survekshan 2019 under Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) by Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India.[2]

Employment[edit]

Out of total population, 6,229 were engaged in work or business activity. Of this 5,351 were males while 878 were females. In census survey, worker is defined as person who does business, job, service, and cultivator and labour activity. Of total 6229 working population, 91.06% were engaged in Main Work while 8.94% of total workers were engaged in Marginal Work. Tangla has an average literacy rate of 76%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 81%, and female literacy is 70%. In Tangla, 10% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Assamese is the major language spoken in the urban area while other widely spoken languages include Bengali, Bodo, Bhojpuri, Nepali, Hindi, Punjabi, English, etc. Bengali, Hindi, Bodo and Assamese are spoken widely in the surrounding areas.

Economy[edit]

The economy of this place is heavily dependent on business. It is a business an commercial hub of the entire district. Cultivators of nearby places finds a good market to sell their products. There are a number of co-operative societies as well as banking institutes. This place also has two weekly market days, one on Tuesday and another on Friday. These markets attracts a large number of people around the district. There are also a number of tea gardens located nearby and Tangla is the nearest commercial access point for them. Before 1950, most of them were owned by British tea companies.

Governance[edit]

Tangla is a part of Mangaldai Lok Sabha Constituency. Biswajit Daimary is the present MLA from 64 No. Paneri LAC.[5]

Transportation[edit]

The town is well connected to the rest of the state by the Mangaldai-Bhutiachang (MB Road/State Highway 4) which allows people to access the National Highway 52 at Mangaldai. The place is also well connected by Railways. It has Tangla railway station which has daily trains to Kamakhya, New Jalpaiguri, Dekargaon, Rangiya and Naharlagun. Bus services also provide good connectivity to different parts of state.

Healthcare[edit]

Tangla CHC Kalaguru Bishnu Rabha Thirty Bedded Govt Hospital is the nearest hospital of the town. There are a number of pharmacies, diagnostic centres and private practitioners in the town. A government run veterinary hospital is also located nearby.

Communication[edit]

Tangla has decent[vague] landline, mobile and internet connectivity. Internet connectivity through wireless data cards and broadband is available. The major cellular service providers are Airtel, IDEA, BSNL, Aircel, Vodafone, Reliance, Jio.

4G services are a recent addition to the place, along with existing 3G, 2G, WLL.
