In the YSR district, forests cover is 500,961 hectares (32.62%) of the total area and the total cropped area is 354,724 hectares (23.10%). Out of the cropped area 49,402 hectares or 16.29% of the total area sown more than once. Dry [[deciduous]] predominate in the area. Both [[Major soil deposits of India#RedSoils|red ferruginous]] and [[Major soil deposits of India#Black Soils|black soils]] are found in the area but the latter soil superior for cultivation forms only 23.7% of the area. The average annual rainfall in the district is 696.6 mm, falling mostly in the monsoon months from around June to November. Agriculture is the primary occupation of the people. The major crops are paddy, groundnut, sunflower, cotton and betel leaves. Mango, papaya, banana, lemon and oranges are the main fruits. K.C.Canal and the Mylavaram Project on the Pennar River are the major irrigation facilities.
