Somashekhar SP is an Indian robotic surgeon, author and chairman of Surgical Oncology Manipal Comprehensive Cancer Center.[1][2] He is the president of the association of Breast Surgeons of India[3] and Editor in Chief of IJGO Springer Indian Journal of Gynec Oncology[4] and Council member of The association of surgeons of India.[5] He is also the Editor of Annals of Breast Diseases.[6]

Career[edit]

Somashekhar SP started his career as a Consultant and Assistant Professor in the Department of Oncosurgery at Gujarat Cancer Research Institute, Ahmedabad. Later, he joined Manipal Comprehensive Cancer Centre of Manipal Hospitals, Bangalore. Dr. Somashekhar has helped to implement IBM Watson for Oncology, an AI technology for diagnosis and treatment of cancer.[7][8]

Somashekhar SP is a teaching faculty for MS-General surgery PG students for Kathmandu University School of Medical Sciences and for Diplomate of National Board (DNB) examinations Surgical Oncology training program. He is also the reviewer of various scientific journals such as the World Journal of Oncology,[9] World Journal of Surgery, European Journal of Surgical Oncology,[10] Annals of Oncology, Indian Journal of Surgery,[11] and Indian Journal of Surgical Oncology[12] to name a few.[13][14]

Honors and achievements[edit]

  • Initiated HIPEC program for Peritoneal Surface Malignancy in India.
  • Performed earliest & popularized Sentinel lymph node biopsy procedure in India.[15]
  • First in India to initiate Robotic Scarless Thyroidectomy programme & TORS[16]
