Shoba Ranganathan is an Indian Australian biochemist and professor of bioinformatics at Macquarie University. Her research considers computational biology and bioinformatics. Her research considers genome annotation and structural bioinformatics.

Early life and education[edit | edit source]

Ranganathan was born and grew up in India.[1] She studied chemistry at the University of Madras.[1] She moved to the Indian Institutes of Technology for her doctoral studies, where she started working in computational chemistry.[1] Her graduate work looked to identify new atomic screening constants, whilst her doctorate developed quadratic potential functions using CNDO/2. After earning her doctorate she moved to the Institut de biologie physico-chimique.[2]

Research and career[edit | edit source]

Ranganathan started her independent career at the Maitreyi College, where she was made Head of the Department of Chemistry. She moved to Australia in 1993, where she worked as a Research Fellow at the University of Sydney and Australian National University. In 2000 she moved to Singapore, and joined the National University of Singapore.[1] In 2004 Ranganathan moved to the Macquarie University. She was made a chair and Professor of Bioinformatics in 2004.[3]

Ranganathan studies genome annotation and transcriptome. She developed theoretical methods for splicing analysis and networking approaches for large-scale data mining. In 2003 she was made the Director of the International Society for Computational Biology. In 2008 she was appointed head of the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence in Bioinformatics.[1]

In 2018 Ranganthan wrote the Elsevier Encyclopedia of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology: ABC of Bioinformatics.[4] In 2023 she was awarded the International Society for Computational Biology Outstanding Contributions Award.[1]
