Saurabh Netravalkar (born 16 October 1991) is an Indian-born American cricketer who is the current captain of the United States cricket team. He is a left-arm medium-fast bowler who has represented India under-19 team.[1] He made his first-class debut for Mumbai in the 2013–14 Ranji Trophy on 22 December 2013.[2] He made his List A debut on 27 February 2014, for Mumbai in the 2013–14 Vijay Hazare Trophy.[3]

Early life[edit]

Netravalkar, a software engineer, is an alumnus of Sardar Patel Institute of Technology, Mumbai and Cornell University. He has worked for Oracle.[4]

Career[edit]

In January 2018, he was named in the United States squad for the 2017–18 Regional Super50 tournament in the West Indies.[5] In August 2018, he was named in the United States' squad for the 2018–19 ICC World Twenty20 Americas Qualifier tournament in Morrisville, North Carolina.[6] In October 2018, he was named as the captain of the United States' team for the 2018–19 Regional Super50 tournament in the West Indies and the 2018 ICC World Cricket League Division Three tournament in Oman.[7][8]

In February 2019, he was named as the captain of the United States Twenty20 International (T20I) squad for their series against the United Arab Emirates.[9][10] The matches were the first T20I fixtures to be played by the United States cricket team.[11] He made his T20I debut for the United States against the United Arab Emirates on 15 March 2019.[12]

In April 2019, he was named as the captain of the United States cricket team for the 2019 ICC World Cricket League Division Two tournament in Namibia.[13] The United States finished in the top four places in the tournament, therefore gaining One Day International (ODI) status.[14] Netravalkar made his ODI debut for the United States on 27 April 2019, against Papua New Guinea, in the tournament's third-place playoff.[15]

In June 2019, he was named in a 30-man training squad for the United States cricket team, ahead of the Regional Finals of the 2018–19 ICC T20 World Cup Americas Qualifier tournament in Bermuda.[16] The following month, he was one of twelve players to sign a three-month central contract with USA Cricket.[17] In August 2019, he was named as the captain of the United States' squad for the Regional Finals of the 2018–19 ICC T20 World Cup Americas Qualifier tournament.[18]

In November 2019, he was named as the captain of the United States' squad for the 2019–20 Regional Super50 tournament.[19] The following month, he was named in the United States's squad for the 2019 United Arab Emirates Tri-Nation Series.[20] In the opening match of the series, against the United Arab Emirates, he took five wickets for 32 runs. He became the first bowler for the United States to take a five-wicket haul in an ODI match.[21] In September 2020, he was signed by the Golden State Grizzlies team for the 2021 Minor League Cricket season.[22]
