"Sanson Ki Mala Pe" (Hindi: साँसों की माला पे; "on the rosary of breaths") is a qawwali song based on the ghazal named "sāñsoñ kī maalā par simroñ nisdin pī kā naam",^[1] which was penned by Meera Bai for her lover God Lord Krishna. Song was composed by the legendary Pakistani singer-songwriter Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and is inspired by popular devotional themes of Mirabai poetry related to Lord Krishna. It was first played by Khan during his first visit to India in 1979, when Indian actor and filmmaker Raj Kapoor invited him at the wedding of his son Rishi Kapoor.^[2]^[3]

The song's devotional content, dedicated to Lord Krishna, has made it a favorite among Hindu devotees, who often include it in their devotional gatherings as a bhajan. The song continues to be a popular choice for performances at both bhajan and qawwali concerts.

Remakes[edit]

The song was recreated for the 1997 Hindi film Koyla, recomposed by Rajesh Roshan, sung by Kavita Krishnamurthy and starring Shahrukh Khan and Madhuri Dixit. The Previous year, in 1996, the song was recomposed by Nadeem–Shravan for another Hindi film Jeet starring Salman Khan, Karisma Kapoor and Sunny Deol. Latter, Michael Winterbottom used the original version of the song as a soundtrack in his 2011 film Trishna starring Freida Pinto and Riz Ahmed. In 2020, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan paid homage to his uncle Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan with a cover version of the song.

Rahat said," Sanson Ki Mala (is) a Qawwali very close to my heart and this time, it has been presented as a fusion track, conceptualised by Salman Ahmed. I dedicate the release to my mentor Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and my father Ustad Farrukh Fateh Ali Khan."^[4]
