HistoryEdit

Ramakrishna Mission Brahmananda College of Education at Rahara is a constituent unit of its parent organization, Ramakrishna Mission Boys’ Home,[9] Rahara. The Ashrama was founded on the 1st September, 1944, as an orphanage for giving shelter and education to the hapless boys rendered orphans due to the disastrous infamous Bengal Famine of 1942-43[10]. A handful of monks led by Swami Punnyanandaji Maharaj of Ramakrishna Math & Ramakrishna Mission initially set up the Ashrama as a students’ home; but gradually it spread its wings in the fields of education and formed an educational complex around the Ashrama of which our College is an integral part.
The College was established on the 17th February, 1961 as Ramakrishna Mission Boys’ Home Post Graduate Basic Training (PGBT) College. Two years later in 1963 the College was renamed as Ramakrishna Mission Brahmananda Post Graduate Basic Training (PGBT) College after the holy name of Srimat Swami Brahmanandaji Maharaj, the first President of Ramakrishna Math & Ramakrishna Mission[11]. The College building was opened on 8th August, 1962 by Revered Swami Madhavanandaji Maharaj, the 9th President of Ramakrishna Math & Ramakrishna Mission[12] and it started functioning under the direct control of the Education Directorate, Government of West Bengal. As a PGBT College it has a glorious past.
Since the academic session of 1999-2000, Ramakrishna Mission Brahmananda PGBT College was converted to a teachers’ training college (B.Ed.) and has been renamed as Ramakrishna Mission Brahmananda College of Education after being affiliated to the University of Calcutta.[13]
In compliance with the notification of the Government of West Bengal No. 300-Edn (U)/EH/IU-38/08 dated 26.05.2008, the College was affiliated to The West Bengal State University, Barasat, from the academic session of 2008-2009.
Since the academic session of 2016-2017 the College has been affiliated to The West Bengal University of Teachers’ Training, Education Planning and Administration (WBUTTEPA). The university has been renamed as Baba Saheb Ambedkar Education University (BSAEU) since 2022.
Ramakrishna Mission Brahmananda College of Education was recognised as a Study Centre of Netaji Subhas Open University[14] (Centre Code: BOAW-11) for conducting ODL B.Ed. (with 179 students) in 2013-14. It was also a Study Centre of West Bengal Board of Primary Education for conducting ODL D.EL.Ed. one-year Bridge Course for in-service teachers (with 92 students) in 2013 and ODL D.EL.Ed. for Upper Primary teachers (with 99 students) in 2015-2017.

AcademicsEdit

Dedicated to teacher education and teachers’ training, the College runs a two-year B.Ed. programmme (Bachelor of Education) consisting of four semesters. B.Ed. is a professional course essential for teaching in schools of India.

Accreditation and AffiliationEdit

Besides being a Government-aided College, Ramakrishna Mission Brahmananda College of Education is NAAC accredited (B, 2.89) and affiliated to Baba Saheb Ambedkar Education University. It is NCTE approved and UGC recognized under Section 2(f) & 12(B) of the UGC Act, 1956.

Campus LifeEdit

The campus of the College occupies 2.5 acres. The college building has three floors with several classrooms, laboratories, conference hall and a library. The College also has a three-storeyed Annexe building with several facilities. The College provides amenities for its students, such as hostel, library, multigym, computer lab with Wi-Fi facility, games and sports and charitable dispensary. The hostel, known as Saradananda Dham,[15][16], is under the direct supervision of the College. The hostel is a two-storeyed building with an adjoining kitchen, dining hall and a prayer hall.
As Ramakrishna Mission Brahmananda College of Education is a residential college, its hostel plays an important part in its training Programme. The College and the Hostel form a single unit. Residing in a hostel with friends (batch mates), senior students and staff promotes a healthy relation between the Management and the tutor & tutee. It gives them a training in community life (i.e. how to live together) based on the principles of cooperation, self-service, fellow feeling, team spirit and tolerance.

CultureEdit

Our students maintain relations with peers from other colleges by participating in inter-college competitions and matches. College along with the Ashrama observes the birthdays of the Holy Trios (Thakur[17][18], Maa[19][20], and Swamiji[21][22]) and Swami Brahmanandaji Maharaj with much pomp and grandeur. Our students celebrate National Yuva Divas on 12th January[23], Deshaprem Divas on 23rd January[24], Republic Day on 26th January[25], International Mother Tongue Day on 21st February[26], Independence Day on 15th August[27] each year with gravity and sincerity. Saraswati Puja i.e. worshipping of Devi Saraswati[28], the Goddess of learning, is conducted and managed solely by the students themselves under the supervision of the Principal.
