Pyar Ke Sadqay (Urdu: پیار کے صدقے, lit.'For the sake of love'; Devanagari: प्यार के सदके) is a 2020 Pakistani drama television series that premiered on Hum TV on 23 January 2020. Directed by Farooq Rind and written by Zanjabeel Asim Shah, the series is produced by Momina Duraid under MD Productions. The show stars Bilal Abbas Khan and Yumna Zaidi in lead roles, with Yashma Gill, Omair Rana, and Atiqa Odho in supporting roles.

Plot Summary[edit]

Pyar Ke Sadqay revolves around the lives of Abdullah and Mahjabeen, two social misfits. Mahjabeen is characterized as an innocent, quirky, clumsy, and carefree young woman who has repeatedly failed her tenth-grade exams. Coming from a lower-middle-class background, she struggles to understand social cues. In contrast, Abdullah is a shy, nerdy, and socially awkward university student from an affluent family, who has been psychologically abused by his stepfather, Sarwar. Both characters are daydreamers with different aspirations; Mahjabeen dreams of escaping her studies to get married, while Abdullah longs for a relationship with his classmate, Shanzey.

Mahjabeen and Abdullah are connected through her father's, Munshi Jee, who works for Abdullah's family. Initially, they are merely acquaintances, but as the plot unfolds, Sarwar becomes infatuated with Mahjabeen and attempts to pursue her romantically. His advances are rejected by Munshi Jee, who deems Sarwar too cunning and old for his innocent daughter.

After facing rejection from their respective interests—Mahjabeen’s fiancé elopes with her best friend on her wedding day, and Abdullah's proposal to Shanzey is turned down—Abdullah marries Mahjabeen out of pity. This angers Sarwar, who plots to undermine Abdullah's relationship with Mahjabeen by belittling her. While Abdullah initially believes Sarwar's words, he gradually begins to appreciate Mahjabeen's qualities.

As the story progresses, Shanzey marries a wealthy businessman but soon realizes he is not the man she thought he was. After enduring abuse, she seeks reconciliation with her father, who ultimately supports her decision to divorce. Eventually, Shanzey decides she wants to marry someone like Abdullah and pursues him with Sarwar's backing, who wants Mahjabeen for himself.

The plot takes a darker turn when Sarwar attempts to assault Mahjabeen. She confides in Abdullah, who dismisses her claims, leading to further complications in their relationship. Tragedy strikes when Munshi Jee is arrested on Sarwar's orders, suffers a heart attack, and dies, leaving Mahjabeen vulnerable.

Abdullah finds himself engaged to Shanzey after she attempts suicide, but during their conversations about their future, he realizes she will not fulfill the nurturing role Mahjabeen did. As family tensions rise, Abdullah's mother, Mansura, becomes suspicious of Sarwar and ultimately encourages Abdullah to embrace his love for Mahjabeen.

In the climax, Mahjabeen's pregnancy is revealed, and she learns of the manipulations surrounding her. Abdullah recognizes Mahjabeen as his true love and breaks off his engagement with Shanzey. The series concludes with Abdullah bringing Mahjabeen back home, Sarwar facing justice, and the couple engaging in playful banter.

Critical Reception[edit]

Pyar Ke Sadqay generated significant buzz prior to its premiere and maintained positive reviews throughout its airing, largely due to its engaging characters and Rind's adept direction. While Bilal Abbas Khan's portrayal of Abdullah was widely praised, Yumna Zaidi's performance as Mahjabeen also garnered favorable reviews. A critic from DAWN Images commended the performances of Zaidi, Khan, Rana, and Odho but noted a critique of the narrative for emphasizing middle-class values over more substantial themes.
