The Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), a coalition of political parties, emerged in September 2020 as a united opposition front against Imran Khan’s government. The alliance accused Khan’s administration of widespread political victimisation, economic mismanagement, and poor governance, allegations that Khan consistently denied both during and after his tenure as Prime Minister. Notably, the PDM also attracted defectors from Khan’s own party, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), further strengthening its anti-government stance.

On 10 April 2022, the PDM successfully moved a no-confidence motion in Parliament, leading to Khan’s removal from power. Following this, the coalition formed its own government, with opposition leader Shehbaz Sharif taking over as Prime Minister. The PDM was led by Fazal-ur-Rehman of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) (JUIF), who served as its president, while Hafiz Hamdullah of the same party acted as spokesperson. Other key figures included Shahid Khaqan Abbasi of the Pakistan Muslim League (N) (PMLN) as Secretary-General, Mahmood Khan Achakzai of the Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PMAP) as Vice President, and Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao of the Qaumi Watan Party (QWP) as Senior Vice President. Earlier, Raja Pervaiz Ashraf of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) had held the position of Senior Vice President, and Mian Iftikhar Hussain of the Awami National Party (ANP) served as the coalition’s former spokesperson.
