National Digital Health Mission
The National Digital Health Mission is an agency of the Government of India which seeks to provide medical identity document to Indian people. This identity document would enable people to use Ayushman Bharat Yojana, which is a service in India's publicly funded health care.
The program aligns with other government programs, including the Aadhaar identification program and the Ayushman Bharat Yojana healthcare program.[1]
Users keep the identification document as an account in a mobile app.[2]
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the establishment of the NDHM on Independence Day 2020.[3] In his description of the program, he said that the program would provide an identification number to everyone in the country, and that the system would manage everyone's government health records.[4]
Responses[edit]
Forbes remarked that because of the large population of India any precedent for data management in the NDHM would establish a model for other national health programs to study.[1]
Commentators for The Ken criticized the announcement of the program for being very expensive with no publicly stated plan for either allocating money to achieve it nor for sustainably funding it in the longer term.[5]
