Naik Narbahadur Thapa, AC was an Indian Army Non Commissioned Officer who was awarded with the first ever peacetime military decoration award Ashoka Chakra for his gallant act in Operation Polo. He was the first person among the two (Flight Lieutenant Suhas Biswas, AC and Havildar Bachittar Singh, AC) to receive the award for the first time.[1] He was a brave soldier with the 5/5 Gorkha Rifles.[2]

Early life[edit]

Narbahadur Thapa was born on March, 1921 in Nepal. His father's name was Jungbir Thapa.[3]

Military career[edit]

Naik Nar Bahadur Thapa joined British Indian Army with 5/5 Gorkha Rifles on 11 November 1940.

Naik Nar Bahadur Thapa was posted with the second Platoon of A Company, 5/5 Gorkha Rifles during the Hyderabad Police Action in Operation Polo. On 13 September 1948, his platoon was posted on left side of the Tungabhadra Railway Bridge.[4] Suddenly enemy started heavy fire on them. Naik Nar Bahadur Thapa paid no attention to his personal safety and life and rushed across 100 yards of open ground under heavy enemy fire. He acted with great courageous act for his duty and nation. He used his khukri and killed the machine gun post enemy. For his courageous action and exceptional devotion, second platoon of A Company, 5/5 Gorkha Rifles was able to secure the Tungabhadra Railway Bridge.[5][6]

Ashoka Chakra awardee[edit]

For his gallant act, personal bravery and extraordinary courage in the operation, he was awarded India's highest peacetime gallantry award Ashoka Chakra.[7][8]
