Mehboob Bég Mirza (born 4 September 1949) is a veteran Indian politician and former Member of Indian Parliament, Lok Sabha, former Cabinet Minister, former MLA and MLC. He serves as Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) party Organizational General Secretary previously belonging to Jammu & Kashmir National Conference.[1]
Early life[edit]
Beg was born in Sarnal, Anantnag district, the son of Mirza Afzal Beg, the first Deputy Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and the first Kashmiri Muslim cabinet minister in Maharaja Hari Singh's cabinet. His father[clarification needed] was the Founder of All Jammu and Kashmir Plebiscite Front. He is[clarification needed] a medical practitioner and studied MBBS from Srinagar Medical College and resides at Srinagar.
Career[edit]
A former 5 time cabinet minister, parliamentarian and legislator, Dr Beg entered state politics in the 1980s. He was a member of Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly for two terms during 1983-1987 and 2002–2008. From March 2009 to May 2009, he was a member of Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Council. It was widely reported that he was to be given Home ministry in 2009. He also served as the Health Minister of Jammu and Kashmir.His work as Health Minister was appreciated by the UNICEF . He was the provincial president of Jammu & Kashmir National Conference from 2003 to 2009. He was also the General Secretary of Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress. He was the Vice President of Indo-Botswana Parliamentary Friendship. He has received Bharat Gaurav Award in the field of politics. He was given the Best Leader Award by the Jammu and Kashmir Police in 2004. He was the president of J&K Handball Association. He got the best Legislator Award in 2006.
On 16 November 2014, Beg announced his support to Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, patron of the Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party . He also decided to withdraw his candidature for 2014 Assembly elections from Anantnag constituency and instead campaign for Sayeed.[2] In the 2009 election he was elected to the 15th Lok Sabha from the Anantnag Lok Sabha constituency of Jammu & Kashmir.[3][4][5][6] On 16 November, Mehboob Beg switched to PDP saying that he would campaign ‘door-to-door’ for PDP patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed during the forthcoming assembly polls in J&K.[7]
He served in the Cabinet. He is known for creating jobs in South Kashmir. He served on many Parliamentary Committees and won various awards including best legislator. He pulled off a victory in the Parliamentary polls despite 12 out of 16 assembly seats held by the opposition Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party. The party appointed him chief spokesperson and later as General Secretary (Organisation).
