The awards of Certificate of Honour and Maharshi Badrayan Vyas Samman were being conferred on academics by the President of India once a year on the Indian Independence Day (15 August); in recognition of their substantial contribution in the various fields of Sanskrit, Arabic, Persian, Pali, Prakrit, classical Kannada, classical Telugu, classical Malayalam, and classical Oriya.
It comes under Ministry of Education - Department of Higher Education (Language division). Maharshi Badrayan Vyas Samman got it's name from MAHARSHI BADRAYAN - Founder of the Vedanta System of Philosophy, who has written the Vedāntasūtra k.a. Brahmasūtra.
Introduced years[edit]
The Certificate of Honour for Sanskrit, Arabic, Persian introduced in the year 1958. In 1966, Pali and Prakrit were added. The Maharshi Badrayan Vyas Samman award introduced in the year 2002 for Sanskrit, Arabic, Persian, Pali, Prakrit. From 2016 onwards , both Certificate of Honour and Maharshi Badrayan Vyas Samman were being provided to classical Kannada, classical Telugu, classical Malayalam, and classical Oriya.
Age criteria and content of award[edit]
1.Certificate of Honour-i was given to selected scholars in the age of 60 years or above. They must be Indian citizen. It constitute a certificate, a memento and one time cash of ₹5lakhs.
2.Certificate of Honour-ii was given to selected scholars in the age of 60 years or above. This reward for Overseas Indians and foreigners(non-Indian origin). It constitute a certificate, a memento and one time cash of ₹5lakhs.
3.Maharshi Badrayan Vyas Samman was given to selected young scholars in the age group of 30 to 45 years. It constitute a certificate of honour, a memento and a one time cash of ₹1lakh.[1][2]
For classical Tamil[edit]
The awards for classical Tamil is provided by President of India separately every year. It was introduced in the year 2005. It being managed by Central Institute of Classical Tamil, an autonomous institution under Ministry of Education - Department of Higher Education (Language division). Due to it's autonomous status and was being first recognized classical language of India, they awarding classical tamil individualy. Accordingly, the nominees for these awards should have a rich experience in published works of academic excellence in different fields relating to the classical phase of Tamil (upto 600 A.D.) shall be considered for award. The awards are:
1.Tholkāppiyar Award (equivalent to Certificate of Honour-i),
2.Kural Peedam Award (equivalent to Certificate of Honour-ii),
3.Young Scholar Award (equivalent to Maharshi Badrayan Vyas Samman - age limit:30-40 years).
