Kudumbavilakku (transl. Light of the family) is an Indian Malayalam-language television soap opera drama.[1] The show premiered on Asianet channel and has streamed on Disney+Hotstar since 27 January 2020. Meera Vasudevan portrays the lead role in the series, returning to television after thirteen years.[2][3][4]

The series is produced by Chitra Shenoy under Good Company Productions, is an official remake of Bengali TV series Sreemoyee which depicts the story of a hardworking housewife Sumithra (played by Meera Vasudevan), who is not acknowledged or appreciated for her work. Then she decides to rediscover herself and prove her worth.

Plot[edit]

The show revolves around a Malayalee homemaker Sumithra Siddharth Menon and her family. Sumithra, a devoted housewife, mother and daughter-in-law, is family-oriented and self-sacrificing. Bereft of the same love and respect in her house from her own family members, she realises the bitter truth and sets out to live her life on her own terms.

  • Meera Vasudevan as Sumithra: She is a kind, honest and dutiful mother. She left college after her marriage to raise her three children. She runs a business of ethnic fabric and handicrafts. Sidharth's ex-wife; Anirudh, Pratheesh and Sheethal's mother; she has a hidden talent in singing and cooking;
  • Dr Shaju Shaam as Rohith Gopal: Sumithra’s senior during her college days.
  • F. J. Tharakan as Shivadas Menon: Sidharth and Sharanya's father and Sumithra and Shreekumar's father-in-law, who tries to help Sumithra to get Sidharth back from Vedika. He always supports Sumithra and treats her as his own daughter.
  • Akshaya R. Nair → Athira Madhav as Dr. Ananya Anirudh Menon: She is a spoilt brat who does not like to cook and she used to humiliate her mother-in-law but understood her mistake, and now supports Sumithra. Anirudh Menon's wife, Sumithra's and Siddu's daughter-in-law. Prema's daughter.
  • Noobin Johny as Pratheesh Menon: He is a singer and cares for and defends Sumithra. Sumithra and Sidharth's younger son; Anirudh and Sheethal's brother; Sanjana's husband .
  • Manoj Nair → Sumesh Surendran as Sreekumar: Sidharth and Sumithra's brother-in-law and Sharanya's husband, Nileena's former love interest. He supports Sumithra and treats her as his own sister.
  • Parvathi Vijay → Amritha Nair as Sheethal Menon: Sumithra and Sidharth's daughter; Anirudh and Pratheesh's sister. She used to humiliate her mother but understood her mistake and now, supports her.
  • Manju Vijeesh as Mallika: Sreenilayam family’s domestic help.
  • Gouri Prakash as Pooja Rohit: Rohit’s daughter who sees Sumithra like her mother.

  • Krishnakumar Menon as Sidharth "Siddhu" Menon: Sumithra's ex-husband; father of Anirudh, Pratheesh and Sheethal. He married his colleague Vedika after divorcing his first wife Sumitra. He humiliated Sumithra and considered her only for domestic work when they were married.
  • Sreejith Vijay → Anand Naranayan as Anirudh Menon: Sidharth and Sumithra’s son, Ananya’s husband. A selfish doctor who humiliates Sumithra.
  • Devi Menon as Saraswathi Menon: Sidharth and Sharanya's mother and Sumithra and Shreekumar's mother-in-law; she disliked and humiliated Sumithra and was jealous of her good nature.
  • Shwetha Venkat → Ameya Nair → Saranya Anand as Vedika Sidharth née Sampath: Sidharth's second wife; Neerav's mother Sampath's ex-wife. She is jealous of Sumithra and humiliates her. She makes Sumithra's life miserable.
  • Sindhu Varma → Manju Satheesh: Shivadas and Saraswathi’s daughter; Sreemukar’s wife. She humiliates Sumithra just like her mother.
