HistoryEdit
GEO is one of the oldest television networks in Pakistan and has consistently achieved impressive TRPs with its daily soaps, reality shows, and drama serials since its establishment. In its early years, the network aired numerous daily soaps that gained significant popularity. Notable shows from the 2000s that are still remembered include "Tere Pehlu Main," "Meri Zaat Zarra-e-Benishan," "Kaash Main Teri Beti Na Hoti," "Tum Ho Kay Chup," "Doraha," and "Yeh Zindagi Hai," among others.[3]
While the channel maintained strong ratings, it faced a setback in 2014 when it was banned in the country for alleged blasphemy on its morning show "Utho Jago Pakistan."[4][5][6] Although the ban was eventually lifted, the network suffered a decline in ratings and received criticism for producing subpar content. It took time for GEO to regain its footing in the ratings. In 2017, the launch of "Khaani" marked a turning point, as the series became a massive success both domestically and internationally, ultimately being added to Netflix due to its widespread acclaim.[7] Around the same period, "Ghar Titli Ka Par" also achieved remarkable success, attracting many viewers on YouTube.[8] These two dramas helped GEO reclaim its status as the most-watched channel in Pakistan, similar to its pre-ban success. Since then, GEO has partnered with 7th Sky Entertainment, producing various record-breaking shows on television and social media platforms.[9]
In 2019, GEO Entertainment achieved two significant records with its shows in the 9:00 pm time slot, as both "Bharosa Pyar Tera" and "Dil-e-Gumshuda" garnered a remarkable 17.0 TRP.[10] The following year, "Munafiq" set a new record for the most-watched show in the 7:00 pm slot, achieving an impressive 22.75 TRP. This made it the second highest-rated serial in the history of Pakistani television and placed it on the top trending list in India on YouTube.[11]
However, GEO Entertainment has faced criticism in recent times regarding its lower picture quality compared to competitors such as HUM HD and ARY Digital, which offer higher quality broadcasts. Additionally, the network has been criticised for producing dramas that resemble Indian daily soaps, leading to accusations of copying content from Indian networks and adapting it into weekly drama serials or daily soaps to boost ratings.[12] in order to get ratings.[13] A notable incident occurred after the Pakistan Stock Exchange attack in July 2020, when the attackers' vehicle was discovered in a later episode of the channel's show "Deewangi." This coincidence sparked significant reactions from audiences, raising concerns about the timing and content of the show.[14][15]
ProgrammeEdit
In recent years, GEO Entertainment has aired several popular programs that have not only achieved high ratings but also garnered international recognition. Notable series include "Mohabbat Tumse Nafrat Hai," "Piya Naam Ka Diya," "Ramz-e-Ishq," "Yaariyan," "Meharposh," "Aye Dil Tu Bata," "Deewangi," "Kahin Deep Jalay," "Rang Mahal," and "Khuda Aur Muhabbat," among others. Additionally, the network has expanded its reach by offering various series on streaming platforms such as Amazon Prime Video, including titles like "Hiddat" and "Yaar-e-Bewafa." These efforts have contributed to GEO's continued prominence in the entertainment industry both domestically and internationally.[16]
