Ganabhaban, also known as Gonobhaban [lower-alpha 1], is located in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka, just north of the National Parliament House. It served as the official residence of the Prime Minister of Bangladesh until the resignation of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Following the Student-People's uprising in July 2024, Ganabhaban is undergoing a transformation into a museum, which will be named the July Uprising Memorial Museum.
History[edit]
Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the leader of Bangladesh after independence, started working from the "President's House", which he renamed "Ganabhaban" or "People's House". Later, it became the "State Guest House Sugandha".
In 1973, after an election, he needed a bigger office and had a new "Ganabhaban" built in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar.
While he worked there until 1975, he never actually lived in this new building. After his time, it was used by military courts. Today, the original "Ganabhaban" houses the Foreign Service Academy.
