Super Hungama (formerly known as Marvel HQ) is an Indian pay television channel owned by Disney Star, a wholly owned subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company India. It airs primarily children's animated series and is a direct sister channel to Hungama TV.[2]

It was launched as Marvel HQ on 20 January 2019, replacing the Indian feed of Disney XD, and was later rebranded to Super Hungama on 1 March 2022, after several delays. Other predecessors of this channel date to 2004.

History[edit]

In December 2004, The Walt Disney Company launched two television channels in India—Disney Channel and Toon Disney—as a part of expanding their South Asian market. Both channels broadcast in English, Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu. Toon Disney initially broadcast in English, Tamil, and Telugu, with a Hindi-language audio track being added on 1 September 2005.[3][4] Toon Disney carried the Jetix block in India. In 2009, Disney XD replaced Toon Disney.[5][6]

Super Hungama was launched on 20 January 2019 as Marvel HQ, replacing the Indian version of Disney XD.[1] Disney India noted that Marvel was a "pop-culture phenomenon" worthy of a dedicated Marvel channel.[7] The channel targeted pre-teens, teens and young adults aged 6–17 with action-adventure animation and live action programming.[8][9]

At launch, the main Marvel programming would consist of four animated shows[1] and 40 percent of the total schedule,[7] with additional Marvel animated series added or seasons started in March 2019. However, over time, other non-Marvel animated series were added, including Pokémon and Beyblade.[1]

On 18 October 2021, Disney announced that Marvel HQ would be rebranded as Super Hungama on 1 December.[10] At the last minute on 30 November, it was delayed due to issues involving the implementation of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India's New Tariff Order 2.0.[11] It was then delayed to 1 March 2022.[12]
