Debangshu Bhattarcharya is an Indian politician who is the General Secretary of All India Trinamool Congress's youth wing in the state of West Bengal and also the party's spokesperson in the state. He is a civil engineer.[6] He penned the famous song Khela Hobe for 2021 West Bengal Legislative Assembly election.[3][7][8]

Early life[edit]

Debangshu Bhattarcharya was born on 1 April 1996 in Bally, West Bengal, to an ordinary family of Bengali Brahmins. His father is a labour contractor by profession.[3] After finishing his schooling at Bally Nischinda Chittaranjan Vidyalaya,[9] Debangshu studied at Elitte Institute of Engineering and Management.[1] He is a junior civil engineer. His admiration for Mamata Banerjee goes way back to 2008 when he was a 8th class student.[3]

Political career[edit]

Debangshu's first video on social platform came in 2016 which was made on the topic of demonetisation.[10] He was taken to address a public meeting for the first time in 2018.[11] But his political career began in 2019 when he officially joined All India Trinamool Congress (AITC).[12][13] He was appointed as the spokesperson of AITC in that year.[14] A year later, he was made the General Secretary of Trinamool Youth Congress.[2][1][10]

He had coined many slogans for the AITC, among which Khela Hobe became the most popular.[3][11][15] Even Prime Minister Narendra Modi responded to the slogan Khela Hobe.[16][17] Debangshu claimed that he was inspired by Mamata Banerjee and Rabindranath Tagore when creating this slogan[7][18][19] and the slogan was coined by him to counter BJP's aggressive politics.[20][21] He had revealed that he received many threats for being active in politics.[11] Debangshu actively participated in AITC's campaign for 2021 Assembly election.[22][23][24][25][26] He labelled anti-incumbency against the central government as the main reason for BJP's defeat in this election.[27]

He was part of a team which went to Tripura in 2021 to campaign for AITC and this team had to face the attack of gangsters. The ruling BJP government of Tripura was blamed by the Trinamool for this attack.[28][29][30][31] Debangshu, along with other AITC workers was arrested by Tripura Police after that attack. Abhishek Banerjee, the General Secretary of AITC, had to intervene to get his party workers released from police detention.[32][33][34]
