Chunavi Hindu

From Bharatpedia, an open encyclopedia

Chunavi Hindu (lit. 'Hindu during elections') is a pejorative term coined and popularized by the Bhartiya Janata Party leader Ravi Shankar Prasad who believe to be the first person to use it in March 2019 during a press conference. In the conference, he called Congress leader Rahul Gandhi a Chunavi Hindu for his visit to Wayanad.[1][2] The term was later widely used by various politicians[3] and social media users against the leaders and workers of the Congress and other political parties for their alleged religious gimmicks right before the elections.[4]

The term literally means a person or a group pretending to be a Hindu only at the time of elections in a bid to woo Hindu voters.[4]
