Chithara is a village in Kollam district in the state of Kerala, India.[1]

Demographics[edit]

As of 2001 India census, Chithara had a population of 20694 with 9727 males and 10967 females.[1]

Administration[edit]

Chithara town is in Mancode village in the Kollam district of Kerala, India. This village is known for having elected the first woman Panchayat President in India, Ms. Sumathi Sukumaran. Madathara is a village located in Chithara town.

Education[edit]

According to the Literacy Survey conducted as part of the Total Literacy Campaign in 1989, this Panchayat had the largest number of illiterate people in Kollam district. However, as years passed, there has been considerable development in the field of education. Initially, this village had only a Lower Primary and Upper Primary School, both managed by the Government. Later, the SN Trust started a high School at Thumpamaonthodi (PARUTHY). Another lower primary school, Al Mina also functioned here.
