Nepal conducts a comprehensive national census every decade to gather demographic, socioeconomic, and developmental data. The census tradition began in 1911 CE using conventional methods, transitioning to modern scientific techniques from the 1952/54 CE survey onwards. Currently, this nationwide exercise is executed by the Central Bureau of Statistics, functioning under the National Planning Commission. Article 281 of Nepal's constitution legally mandates this decadal enumeration as a compulsory national activity.
