Azhagiya Tamil Magan (transl. Adorable Tamil son) is a 2007 Indian Tamil-language action thriller film written and directed by Bharathan, written by S. K. Jeeva and produced by Swargachitra Appachan. The film stars actor Vijay in a dual role as Hero and Villain while Shriya Saran, Namitha, and N. Santhanam play in supporting roles. With cinematography by K. Balasubramaniam and editing by Anthony, the film's score and the soundtrack are composed by A. R. Rahman.

The film revolves around an excelling athlete who has the ability to predict future events. With his unique ability, he identifies several tragic future events, including the attempted murder of his lover by a look-alike. The film was released on the 8th of November 2007 and distributed worldwide by Pyramid Saimira. The film collected $1,043,064 or 8 crore at the overseas box office.[2][3] The film received mixed reviews with praising Vijay's performance, characterisations and A.R.Rahman's soundtrack and score but criticized its length and predictability. It became a moderately successful venture.[4]

Prior to its release, the film was rumored to be inspired from the Hollywood film Final Destination and that the leading actor had a supernatural power. The claims were refuted by director Bharathan.[5]

The film was reviewed by BBC UK, mentioning the film has the right mix of romance and action, becoming first time ever for a Indian Tamil film to be reviewed by International media outlets.[6]

Plot[edit]

Gurumoorthy alias Guru is an MBA student and athlete living in the suburban area of Pallavaram in Chennai. He participates in a state-level running competition where he meets Shakthi, who also participates in the competition. Guru understands that Shakthi needs to win the competition, which will help him secure a job through the sports quota as he is the only breadwinner for his family. Abinaya alias Abi is the only daughter of the rich businessman Anand Chelliah and is a friend of Shakthi's sister. Abi challenges Guru that Shakthi will be the winner of the competition. Guru decides to run slowly so that Shakthi can win. Later, Abi understands that Guru has purposefully run slow behind Shakthi and starts liking his character. They become good friends, and slowly love starts to blossom between the duo.

Suddenly, Guru visualizes a few bizarre incidents which also occur sometimes later. Guru consults a psychiatrist, and he says that Guru suffers with a syndrome called extrasensory perception (ESP), whereby he can get to know about certain future incidents. Guru worries that such thoughts disturb him mentally, and he cannot live a peaceful life.

Guru and Abi's parents get to know about their love, and they plan to get the couple married. One day, Guru dreams of stabbing Abi and gets frightened that Abi will be killed by himself someday. So he decides to stay away from Abi for a few days and leaves to Mumbai without informing anyone. In Mumbai, he sees his look-alike, Prasad, who is a billionaire businessman and a Mumbai-based Tamilan. Now Guru believes that it would be Prasad who will stab Abi and follows the latter. But while crossing a road, Guru meets with an accident and gets hospitalised by the local people for a few days.

Prasad meets Dhanalakshmi on the train journey and makes love to her. Prasad has come to Chennai to meet Sait and threatens Sait to return the money owed to him. Meanwhile, Abi starts looking for Guru as he has not contacted her for a few days due to the argument before the interval. Abi meets Prasad and mistakes him for Guru. Abi talks to Prasad and takes him to her home. Prasad is a money minded womanizer, who was once born with a rich and wealthy lifestyle, only for it to end, when his parents died in a plane accident, and their business partners took all the money away. Prasad understands that he has a look-alike, and Abi has mistaken him as her lover. Prasad decides to utilize the opportunity and plan to marry Abi, so that he can lead a corrupted lavish lifestyle, with the help of a corrupt jeweler named Sait, who is also his colleague and friend.

Guru gets discharged from the hospital and tries to contact Abi. He also comes to Chennai to meet Abi at her house. Now everyone is shocked to see Guru and Prasad as they both look exactly similar, and Abi is confused that who is really Guru. Prasad pretended as Guru and made everyone believe. Guru's friends conduct a running race to find the real Guru, as Guru is an athlete, but as Guru does not perform well due to his accident in Mumbai, Prasad wins the race, which makes Abi and his friends believe him as Guru. The next day, while Abi talks to Prasad, she finds that he misinterprets an event that occurred before, which makes her realize that Prasad is the one who is with her and not Guru. She tries to run away from Prasad, while Prasad chases her. Guru tries to rescue Abi and kill Prasad. But when Guru is about to stab Prasad, Abi accidentally pushes Prasad and gets stabbed by Guru.

Guru is shocked, and Prasad knocks Guru over and changes clothes with guru and takes Abi with him. Prasad admits Abi in a hospital and again pretends as Guru. Abi believes again that Prasad is Guru. Abi tells that how come someone is trying to taking away a girl who is in love with someone else, and she says that Prasad must not have born to legitimate parents. Prasad realizes his cheap behaviour upon hearing this and confesses that he is Prasad and not Guru. Meanwhile, Guru also rushes to the hospital. Prasad apologizes to Guru and Abi and leaves the place. On the way, he meets Dhanalakshmi. She happily announces that she is pregnant with twins, and they both unite.

Critical reception[edit]

Sify stated, "The highlight here is that there are 2 Vijays - the good guy and the bad guy. Director Barathan has tried out a new format, where both the hero and the villain entertain the audiences with howlarious moments, that brings the house up. Vijay makes it work and believable as he melds an effortfully from casual song froid to utter seriousness. His terrific comic timing, his ability to mock and lampoon makes his performance absolutely hits a bulls eye. In the negative character Prasad’s role, he is the veritable scene stealer. He has dubbed impressively modulating his voice for both the characters, and the way he dances in the introductory title song is amazing. No two ways about it, Vijay is the heart and soul of ATM and rated 5/5.[8][9] IndiaGlitz stated Azhagiya Tamil Magan banks heavily on Vijay's charm and performance, Vijay has lived up to the challenge created by the huge success of Pokkiri. He looks stylish and handsome with his dual role. He lights up the screen with his dynamic performance. Director Bharathan has exploited Vijay's strengths in a dual role as well. He has provided a perfect family entertainer and rated 5/5 as well.[10] Bollywood Life stated, "When you think about Vijay's dance moves, the first song which comes to our mind his energetic, inspiring number Ellappugazhum from ATM - Azhagiya Tamil Magan. Incidentally, the words from the song "Ellappugazhum iraivan ke" are the once uttered by Mozart of Madras AR Rahman every time he receives an award. To the tunes of Rahman, Vijay's awe-inspiring dance moves will make you stand up from your seat, pumping your fist with new found energy."[11]
