Indranil Khan (born 1989) is an Indian politician and oncologist who has been serving as a Minister of State (Independent Charge) in the Government of West Bengal since June 2026, holding the portfolios of Youth Services and Sports and Consumer Affairs. He is a member of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly, representing the Behala Paschim constituency since May 2026. A member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), he previously served as the state president of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) in West Bengal.[1][2]
Early life and education[edit | edit source]
Khan was born in 1989 in Ballygunge, Kolkata, and spent his formative years in Batanagar on the southwestern fringes of the city.[3] He comes from a family of doctors; his grandfather and father, Dr. C. K. Khan, were both physicians. His father worked at Bata Hospital before retiring and later associated with the state health department and Britannia on a part-time basis. His elder sister, Debarati, serves as a joint Block Development Officer in Amdanga.[1]
He studied at South Point High School, Kolkata. He qualified in both medical and engineering entrance examinations before choosing to pursue medicine.[1][4] Khan completed his MBBS from North Bengal Medical College and obtained an MD in radiotherapy from Medical College, Kolkata (under the West Bengal University of Health Sciences) in 2017. He later obtained the European Certification in Medical Oncology (ECMO) from the European Society for Medical Oncology in Oxford in 2019 and is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO).[3][5]
Medical career[edit | edit source]
Khan is a clinical oncologist specialising in radiotherapy, chemotherapy, palliative care and supportive care. He has practised as a consultant at several hospitals in Kolkata, including AMRI Hospitals (Dhakuria), Calcutta Medical Research Institute (CMRI), Medica Super Specialty Hospital and others.[5][6] He has presented research at national and international medical conferences, including work on quality of life in patients with non-small cell lung cancer treated with palliative radiotherapy.[6]
In 2020, he founded MEDE VISION, an organisation focused on healthcare awareness, medical education and policy discussions.[7]
Political career[edit | edit source]
Khan became involved in student politics during his college years and has been associated with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. He served as a National Executive Council Member of ABVP in 2017 and as State Vice President of ABVP Paschim Banga in 2019.[7][3]
He joined the Bharatiya Janata Party and became a State Executive Committee member and media panelist in 2021. The same year, he was appointed State President of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) in West Bengal, a position he held while continuing his medical practice.[7][8] As BJYM state president, he participated in organisational activities and protests, including one in March 2024 in which he and other workers were detained by Kolkata Police during a demonstration seeking details of utilisation certificates.[9]
2026 assembly election[edit | edit source]
In the 2026 West Bengal Legislative Assembly election, Khan contested from Behala Paschim as the BJP candidate. The constituency had been represented by Partha Chatterjee of the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) since 2001. Khan defeated AITC candidate Ratna Chatterjee by a margin of 24,699 votes, securing 113,171 votes (47.69 per cent) against her 88,472 votes. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) candidate Nihar Bhakta finished third with 30,676 votes. The BJP won all ten wards comprising the constituency.[10][11][3]
During the campaign, he identified issues including waterlogging, healthcare infrastructure at Vidyasagar State General Hospital, and employment opportunities. His election office was alleged to have been vandalised by TMC workers, for which he filed a police complaint.[12]
Ministerial career[edit | edit source]
Following the BJP's victory in the 2026 assembly election, Suvendu Adhikari was sworn in as Chief Minister on 9 May 2026. In a cabinet expansion on 1 June 2026, Khan was inducted as a Minister of State with independent charge.[2][1] Portfolios were allocated on 10 June 2026, assigning him the departments of Youth Services and Sports and Consumer Affairs. He succeeded Nisith Pramanik in the sports portfolio.[13]
As sports minister, Khan has outlined priorities including infrastructure development, grassroots talent identification (particularly from regions such as North Bengal, Jangalmahal and the Sundarbans), reducing political interference in sports administration, and collaboration with educational institutions and private stakeholders. He has also announced plans relating to stadium upgrades, athlete support systems and hosting national-level sporting events.[14]

Khan is unmarried and lives with his parents in Kolkata. He is a Bengali Hindu.[3][15]
