Highway system

The Bangalore–Chennai Expressway is a proposed access-controlled expressway between the cities of Bengaluru, the capital of Karnataka and Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu. It will run 262 km (163 mi) from Hoskote in Bangalore Metropolitan Area to Sriperumbudur just outside Greater Chennai Metropolitan Area. It is planned to allow vehicles to reach 120 km/h (75 mph).[1] It is decided to be built as a four lane expressway.[2] This expressway was designated as National Expressway 7 on January 1, 2021.[3]

Design Issues

  • Expressways currently being constructed in the India are 8-lane with land acquired for future expansion to 12-lane. Land for 4-lane is allocated in the middle of the expressway for future expansion. Delhi-Mumbai Expressways, Bangalore Peripheral Ring road, Chennai-Salem Expressways are designed to be 12-lane, with 8-lane initial construction.
  • Many of the advantages initially proposed had been lost as Expressway will be 4-lane, where as existing National Highways in those stretch are already 6-lane.
  • A direct route between Venkatagirikota and Ranipet would have reduced the distance of the Expressways by 60 km and travel time by 45 minutes. It would have saved lakhs of liters of imported vehicle fuel for India. But, officials did not make effort to get permission for Expressway to go through Eastern Ghats. All of the Greenfield Expressways go through shortest path for reducing construction cost and save the fuels for the country.

Uses

Many industrial hubs have planned to start up their next projects near Banavaram, which already has a TVS brake manufacturing unit. Mahindra, Bajaj, and Nissan groups plan to start new plants in that area.

Prospects

Realtors are secretly starting to invest in places near Walajapet (Banavaram, Keezhveeranam) as these places have been marked as the next industrial hub. Japanese investors expressed interest in this road to link harbours. Japanese real estate companies such Nippon Expressway Limited have conducted detailed studies on areas like Panniyur and Keezhveeranam village and encouraged investors to focus on these areas.

The National Highways Development Project (NHDP) phase 6 has been established, following expectations of the new government's involvement, and before the real estate prices begin to rise along the expressways, mainly near Ranipet-Ponnapanthangal-Arakonam[4] (Tamil Nadu).[5]

Costs

Costs are estimated to be around ₹3,840 crore (equivalent to ₹41 billion or US$580 million in 2019).[6][7]

Extension

The Indian National Expressway Network was proposed by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. The Government envisioned a Bengaluru-Mangalore Greenfield Expressway.[8] A Mangalore-Chennai Expressway through Bengaluru has also been proposed.[9]

Project status updates

  • Feb 2018: Work on expressway to begin soon. [10]
  • Aug 2018: Land acquisition to start soon. [11]
  • Dec 2018: ₹1,370 crores already spent by central government on pre construction activities of this ₹17,930 crores expressway. [12]
  • Feb 2019: More than 60% land required for 262 km expressway is acquired. Work to begin in six months. Expressway to be ready by 2023.[13]
  • Nov 2020: Acquisition of required land of 2,650 hectares, nearly done. Tenders invited for three packages out of total 10 packages.[14]
  • Feb 2021: The expressway will now be 4 lane wide instead of earlier 8 lanes wide.[15]
  • Feb 2021: Dilip Buildcon declated lowest bidder (L1) for 26.4 km long package 1 (starting from Bangalore and ending at Malur) and 27.1 km of package 2 (from Malur to Bangarpet) of the expressway. Both these 4 lane packages are expected to be completed in 24 months. [16]
