YSR district (formerly Kadapa or Cuddapaa) is one of 26 districts in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.

YSR district was one of the 13 new districts formed in 2022 , with its headquarters at Kadapa. The reorganisation of the districts increased the number of districts in Andhra Pradesh to 26. It has 3 revenue divisions - Jammalamadugu revenue division, Kadapa revenue division and Badvel revenue division.[1]

Kadapa district was renamed YSR district in 2010 after Yeduguri Sandinti Rajasekhara Reddy (8 July 1949 – 2 September 2009), who was chief minister of Andhra Pradesh for two terms. In a political career spanning 30 years, he never lost an election. He died in a helicopter accident.[2][3][4][5]

The total geographical area of the YSR district is 15,379 sq km. It is linked with the historically famous Dandakaranya of Ramayana fame. It is said that Rama, Sita and Lakshmana passed through forest. The holy rivers Penna (Panakini), Papaghni, Chitravati, Mandavya flow through the area.[6] YSR district is composed of 3 revenue divisions, 36 mandals, 557 s, 726 revenue Villages and 2,257 habitations.[7]

Transport

Kadapa Junction railway station is a station in the Guntakal railway division of the South Central Railway. It has 3 platforms, 60 trains halt at this station and 4 trainsFile:Kadapa railway station.jpg originate from or terminate at this station. The station stands on a electrified double track.[9]

Sri Lankamalleswara Wildlife Sanctuary

Sri Lankamalleswara Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the Lankamalal hill rages about 30 km from Kudapa in Andhra Pradesh. [10]

Dry deciduous forest is found in the higher elevations of the sanctuary and there are scrub forest in the plains. It covers an area of 464.42 sq km. This sanctuary was declared mainly for the protection of the Critically endangered Jerdon’s Courser Rhinoptilus bitorquatus, other species of fauna seen in this sanctuary are: Leopard, Indian wild dog, sloth bear, chital, sambar, chinkara and wild boar. [11]
