Begusarai railway station (code BGS) is a railway station in the Sonpur division of East Central Railway. Begusarai is better known as the Industrial Capital of Bihar, the birthplace of noted poet Rashtrakavi Ramdhari Singh Dinkar and karmabhoomi of the Great freedom fighter, first chief minister and architect of modern Bihar Dr. Shrikrishna Sinha alias Sri Babu.
Begusarai is an industrial and commercial hub, a district headquarter town and a municipal corporation. The township of IOCL Barauni Refinery is situated in Begusarai municipal corporation area.
Begusarai railway station is the main station of Begusarai district. Despite all these facts, more than one dozen pairs of long distance mail express trains do not stop at BGS. Due to unavailability of better train facilities, passengers are often compelled to board trains from Mokama (MKA), Hathidah, Barauni junction (BJU), Jamalpur Khagaria and Patna.
The major facilities available are waiting rooms, computerized reservation facility and vehicle parking. The vehicles are allowed to enter the station premises. The station also has STD/ISD/PCO telephone booth, toilets, tea stalls, fruit stall, dairy stall, meal stall and book stall. The station has total three platforms and are interconnected with two foot over bridges. Several electrified local passenger trains and express trains run from Barauni Junction to neighbouring destinations such as Katihar, Munger, Saharsa, Purnia, New Jalpaiguri among others.[2][3][4]
The Indian Railways has set up a Railway Station Development Corporation (RSDC) that is working to improve the major railway stations. In 1st phase RSDC has selected Begusarai and 04 other most important railway stations of ECR zone, including Muzaffarpur, Patna, Gaya. They will build and develop Restaurants, shopping areas and food plaza/courts etc. for commercial business and improving passenger amenities on these "World Class" Railway Stations. For this RSDC has already started the process and in coming days people will get World class facilities here.
