Pattegar (also spelt as Patvegar, Patewegar, Patwegar, Patvekari, Patekar & Pattagar) is a Hindu community predominantly residing in the Indian states of Karnataka, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. They wear the sacred thread[1] and claim to be Kshatriyas.[2][3] They are Somavamshiya Sahasrarjun Kshatriyas[4][5] or SSK Samaj.[6][7]
All of them follow Hinduism[8] and are traditionally silk weavers.[9] Their principal deity is Shakti.[10] They claim their lineage to legendary king Sahasrarjuna and celebrate Sahasrarjuna Jayanti.[11][12]
Language[edit]
The Pattegars speak a language called Pattegari or Khatri or Saurashtra,[13] a dialect of Gujarati with the amalgamation of present-day Sanskrit, Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, Punjabi, Telugu and Kannada.[14]
