DEL48 (read D.E.L. Forty-Eight) is an Indian idol girl group whose name is derived from the city in India where they are based, and modeled after the Japanese idol group AKB48. Formed in 2019, it is the 8th AKB48 sister group outside of Japan and adopted the concept of "idols you can meet". DEL48 was officially launched along with MUB48 on June 19, 2019, in an event held in Delhi, India.[1] The group is managed by YKBK48 Entertainment Pvt Ltd, a company headquartered in Gurgaon,[citation needed] and Yoshiya Kato serves as chairman and Rohit Bakshi as CEO of the company.[2][3] The group went on a hiatus since October 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

HistoryEdit

The creation of the group was announced on June 19, 2019, at an event held in Delhi, India.[4] The group was the eighth AKB48 sister group to be launched, after the groups JKT48, BNK48, MNL48, AKB48 (Team SH), AKB48 (Team TP), SGO48, and CGM48.[1][5] While the group took its name from its proposed base location of Delhi, India. DEL48 is based on the concept of 'idols with whom fans can meet' and is involved in the entertainment industry including theater performance, concert, other entertainment events, music record release, movies, media appearance.[6]

In 2019, DEL48 launched its own YouTube channel and announced that it would be accepting applications from girls aged between 12 and 20.[7] The first round of the first DEL48 audition took place from July 19, 2019, attracting more than 10,000 applicants. Each audition was five-minutes long, consisting of a singing, acting, and dancing test.[8][9]

On December 30th, Glory was the first member introduced. The remaining 21 members were announced the next day. Glory performed with other sister group on NHK 2019.

The group was confirmed to debut in Spring 2020 by Glory in a Japanese interview, but was posponed due to the pandemic. The group has no activity and only post on Instagram & Youtube every friday. However, Glory, Beanie, and Reyna were chosen to perform along the AKB48 Group in One Love Asia Concert, performing Koisuru Fortune Cookie.

In October 2020, most of the members have already opened their personal Instagram account leading to rumours about disbandment. Deepak Nandal, DEL48 producer, confirmed YKBK48 has closed DEL48 and will terminate the members’s contract at the end of October due to the Corona Virus.[10] However, in October 16th, it’s confirmed that DEL48 is on hiatus.
