Biwi No.1 (transl. Wife No. 1) is a 1999 Indian Hindi-language comedy-drama film directed by David Dhawan, produced by Vashu Bhagnani, and featuring Anil Kapoor, Salman Khan, Karishma Kapoor, Tabu, and Sushmita Sen, Amitabh Bachchan and Saif Ali Khan appear in cameo roles. The film was theatrically released in India on 28 May 1999, receiving generally positive reviews from critics, and proved to be the second highest-grossing Bollywood film of the year. The film was nominated for seven awards at the 45th Filmfare Awards, including Best Film (Bhagnani), Best Director (Dhawan), Best Actress (Karisma Kapoor), and Best Comedian (Khan and Anil Kapoor), winning Best Supporting Actress (Sen). It is a remake of the 1995 Tamil-language film Sathi Leelavathi.[3]
Plot
Prem Mehra is married to the loving yet traditional Pooja Makhija, and they have 2 children. Rupali Walia arrives at Prem's office to give interview for role of a model. They are attracted to each other and ultimately fall in love.
The couple begin a romantic relationship. Rupali is much preferable to Prem due to her modern lifestyle and fashionable choices as compared to Pooja. She learns about them and asks him to choose between her or his family.
Prem chooses and moves in with Rupali, leaving his family behind with Pooja. With the help of Prem's friend Lakhan Khurana, Pooja has a make-over turning modern and taking on modeling assignments.
Pooja sends her mother-in-law Sushila and children to live with Prem and Rupali. They intentionally trouble Rupali and convince Prem that Rupali keeps them hungry and wants to poison and kill them.
Ultimately the relationship between Prem and Rupali breaks down. Prem realizes she only came to him since he gave her material things, while Pooja stuck with him via thick and thin. Rupali gets back with her ex-boyfriend Deepak.
Lakhan befriends Rupali, calling her his sister. While hugging her, his wife Lovely sees them and misunderstands. She leaves the house, but Lakhan chases after and they make up. He says to Lovely that she is his "Biwi no. 1."

Production
Rambha was signed for Tabu's role but later opted out. Sanjay Dutt was signed for the film, but was later replaced by Anil Kapoor. Manisha Koirala was offered the role of Pooja, but she rejected it for unknown reasons and was subsequently replaced by Karishma Kapoor. Filming took place in areas of Florida such as Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach. Second part of filming took place in Delhi and Mumbai compound areas.
Reception
The movie response was good in parts of India, and considered a super-hit,[2] because business effected due to Cricket World Cup 1999. The collections were close to 50% in all centers. Biwi No.1 was the second highest-grossing film of Bollywood that year after Hum Saath-Saath Hain ranks 53rd in the List of Top 500 Bollywood movies after adjusting inflation its worldwide gross reaches ₹49.81 crores.[4]

Music
The Biwi No.1 soundtrack was composed by Anu Malik except for "Mehboob Mere" which was composed by Sukhwinder Singh. The lyrics were written by Sameer, Dev Kohli (only Biwi No. 1), and Sukhwinder Singh (only Mehboob Mere & Hai Hai Mirchi). The songs "Chunnari Chunnari" and "Ishq Sona Hai" became a major hit after its release in 1999. The track "Aan Milo Ya Milne Se" did not feature in the movie.
