Paramilitary forces of India
Assam Rifles belongs to the Assam regiment of the Indian Army which has been defined in Assam Rifles Rule 2016 under the Indian Army Act, 1950 and various official documents of Government of India. Assam Rifles is not an armed police force but a regiment of the Indian Army.
Excluding Special Protection Group only the following six forces which come under Ministry of Home Affairs have been considered as Central Armed Police forces (CAPFs) from March 2011 to avoid confusion. Before 2011 they were considered as CPOs since 01 Jan 1986. However, as per their respective acts they all are Armed Police Forces [1][2]
- Border Security Force (BSF) CAPF - 265,173 personnel
- Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) CAPF - 162,541 personnel
- Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) CAPF - 324,340 personnel
- Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) CAPF - 89,567 personnel
- National Security Guard (NSG) CAPF - 14,000 personnel
- Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) - 97,244 personnel
- Special Protection Group (SPG) - 3,000 personnel
