Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) was a semi-autonomous tribal region situated in north-western Pakistan, which existed from 1947 until its merger with the neighbouring province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in 2018 through the Twenty-fifth amendment to Pakistan's constitution. FATA comprised seven tribal agencies (functioning as districts) and six frontier regions, and was administered directly by the federal government through a special legal framework known as the Frontier Crimes Regulations.
On 24 May 2018, the National Assembly of Pakistan voted in favour of a constitutional amendment to merge FATA with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which received Senate approval the following day. As this merger would affect the provincial boundaries of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the amendment was subsequently presented to and passed by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly on 27 May 2018 with a majority vote. On 28 May 2018, the President of Pakistan signed the FATA Interim Governance Regulation, establishing interim administrative arrangements for FATA to govern the territory until its full integration with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa within a two-year timeframe. The 25th Amendment received final assent from President Mamnoon Hussain on 31 May 2018, thereby officially merging FATA with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
