Naik Nar Bahadur Thapa joined [[British Indian Army]] with 5/5 Gorkha Rifles on 11 November 1940.
 
Naik Nar Bahadur Thapa  was posted with the second [[Platoon]] of A [[Company (military unit)|Company]], 5/5 Gorkha Rifles during the [[Hyderabad Police Action]] in Operation Polo. On 13 September 1948, his platoon was posted on left side of the [[Tungabhadra River|Tungabhadra]] Railway Bridge.<ref>{{Cite web|title=Hyderabad Operations - 1948|url=http://www.indiandefencereview.com/spotlights/hyderabad-operations-1948/|url-status=live|website=Indian Defence Review}}</ref> Suddenly enemy started heavy fire on them. Naik Nar Bahadur Thapa paid no attention to his personal safety and life and rushed across 100 yards of open ground under heavy enemy fire. He acted with great courageous act for his duty and nation.
