Aizawl FC was founded in 1984 in [[Aizawl]], the capital of the Indian state of [[Mizoram]] and have since participated in various amateur tournaments.
 
In January 2012 they were officially certified by the [[All India Football Federation]] to participate in the [[I-League 2nd Division]], the second tier of football in India. Aizawl Football Club is an Indian professional football club based in Aizawl, Mizoram that competes in the I-League, the second tier of Indian club football.[5] Formed in 1984, Aizawl FC earned the entry in India's top-tier league, I-League in 2015–16,[6] after winning 2015 I-League 2nd Division. Aizawl FC became the first football club from the Northeast to win the top flight of Indian Football.[7]

History

Aizawl FC was founded in 1984 in Aizawl, the capital of the Indian state of Mizoram and have since participated in various amateur tournaments.

In January 2012 they were officially certified by the All India Football Federation to participate in the I-League 2nd Division, the second tier of football in India. This move would begin a new chapter for Aizawl Football Club as they would officially become professional.[8]

In September 2012 they participated in 2012 Indian Federation Cup Qualifiers. Finally, the team qualified for I League 2nd Division after its second attempt. In 2015, they won 2015 I-League 2nd Division and as a result they'll participate in India's top-tier football tournament I-League in 2015–16 I-League, the first team from Mizoram to do so.[6]

Khalid Jamil is Aizawl's 2016–17 I-League winning manager

On 20 December 2016, Khalid Jamil was announced as the head coach of the first team for 2016–17 I-League.[9] On 30 April 2017, Aizawl won the 2016–17 I-League and became the first team from North-East India to win the top flight of Indian Football.[10][11] Aizawl has also participated in the 2018 Indian Super Cup and reached the quarter-finals.[12]

In August 2020, Aizawl FC announced the signing of three midfielders- David Laltlansanga, Vanlalnghenga, and Thasiama. They retained both the foreigners Alfred Jaryan and Richard Kasagga for the upcoming season. Later they signed center back Vanlalzuidika from Chhinga Veng F.C. and on 30 August they signed another defender K.Lalmalsawma from their Mizoram Premier League rivals Electric Veng FC.[13]

In the 2020–21 I-League season, Aizawl began their journey on 3 February against Churchill Brothers SC and the match ended 0–0.[14] Aizawl finished on 7th position at the league table with 24 points in 14 matches including both the stages.[15][16]

Stadium

Aizawal FC plays all their home matches at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium.[19] It has Artificial turf and has a capacity of 20,000 spectators. The stadium is a two tier stadium and is currently under construction. It hosted the home games of Aizawl in both the I-League and Mizoram Premier League.

Support and rivalry

Supporters

The core of fans of Aizawl consists of the Ultra Aizawl.[citation needed] They were also the first who brought the Ultra movement in India's stages. Large banners, flags and double holder characterize the Fans, as well as a "pre-Inger" with megaphones. The Rajiv Gandhi Stadium has seen an average attendance of 20,000.[20]
