Mahilpur was part of the [[Indus Valley civilisation]], although it was founded probably during the Vedic period.{{citation needed|date=July 2016}} Chinese pilgrim Huang Tsang visited it in 635 when he was going to Chamba valley from Jalandhar and described it as Sri Mahipalpur in his travel accounts. The 1905 Gazetteer mentioned Mahilpur as the seat of Bains Jat clan of this area.[2][3][4] Mahilpur was also the seat of Bains Jat Chaudhris/Jagirdars of the area during the Mughal era[5].
