Sydney Bernice Sweeney (born 12 September 1997)[1] is an American actress who gained prominence in 2018 through her appearances in the television series Everything Sucks!, The Handmaid's Tale, and the limited series Sharp Objects. In 2019, she had a small role in Quentin Tarantino's film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Sweeney achieved wider recognition for her performances in the HBO drama series Euphoria (2019–present) and the first season of the anthology series The White Lotus (2021), both of which earned her nominations for two Primetime Emmy Awards.[2][3] In 2023, she portrayed Reality Winner in the drama film Reality and starred in the commercially successful romantic comedy Anyone but You. The following year, she starred in the superhero film Madame Web and produced and acted in the horror film Immaculate.

Early Life

Sydney Bernice Sweeney was born in Spokane, Washington, to Lisa (née Mudd) and Steven Sweeney on 12 September 1997.[4][5]Her mother is a former criminal defence lawyer, while her father works in hospitality.[6] She has one brother and was raised in north Idaho in a rural lakeside home that her family has occupied for five generations.[7] Sweeney describes her upbringing as being from a "religious family".[8]

She attended middle school at Saint George's School in Spokane, where she participated in numerous sports, stating, "I was in every single sport possible," including soccer, baseball, and snow slalom skiing. Sweeney sustained a wakeboarding injury as a child, resulting in a permanent scar near her eye.

Sweeney developed an interest in acting after auditioning for an extra role in an independent film shot in Spokane. To persuade her parents to support her acting ambitions, she presented them with a five-year business plan. She began auditioning for and booking commercial acting jobs in Seattle and Portland, Oregon, where her family temporarily lived, before moving to Los Angeles at the age of 13.

In high school, Sweeney was involved in the robotics team and mathematics club, ultimately graduating as valedictorian from Brighton Hall School in Burbank, California. In 2016, she briefly worked at Universal Studios Hollywood but left when she secured an acting role. She also attended the University of California, Los Angeles, for a short period.

Personal Life

Sweeney began dating businessman Jonathan Davino in 2018, and they became engaged in 2022. They collaborated on several film projects, including Anyone but You and Immaculate (2024), with Sweeney referring to Davino as her "producing partner". However, they separated in 2025, and their wedding, originally scheduled for May, was cancelled.

An automobile enthusiast, Sweeney has restored a 1969 Ford Bronco and a 1965 Ford Mustang. In partnership with Ford Motor Company, she designed a custom 2024 Mustang.
