In 1989, Gill held the position of Chief General Manager ED (Safety & Rescue) at Coal India Limited in Raniganj, West Bengal. On November 13 the same year, a group of 220 coal miners were working at a coal mine in Raniganj, West Bengal where a series of blasts were being carried out to break the coal seam. Unfortunately, during these operations, an inadvertent contact with the upper seam of the mine triggered a sudden inflow of water into the mine shafts because of which 71 miners found themselves trapped deep within the borewell, while the rest were swiftly evacuated. As water began to flood the shafts, six coal miners tragically lost their lives.

Gill, arriving on the scene, made a resolute decision to spare no effort in saving the lives of those 65 miners. He conceived an ingenious plan to construct a steel capsule capable of evacuating one person at a time. A 22-inch diameter borehole was promptly drilled to facilitate the passage of this life-saving capsule. After two days of relentless work, the capsule was finally ready for deployment. Though he had initially briefed two rescue personnel, who abandoned their duties at the last moment.

Undaunted, Gill decided to carry out the rescue operation himself. In recognition of his bravery, Gill received numerous awards and honors. In 2008, he was appointed as a member of the [[Disaster management in India|Disaster Management Committee]] in Amritsar, Punjab, contributing to disaster preparedness and response efforts. Additionally, on April 26, 2018, he was appointed as the President of [[Rotary International]], actively participating in various social service activities. Gill was honoured with India's highest civilian gallantry award [[Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak]] (SJRP) for saving the lives of 65 miners, by the President of India and became the first living person to receive the gallantry award. In 2017, Indian director [[Tinu Desai]] approached Jaswant Singh Gill with the idea of a biopic based on his life. Unfortunately, Jaswant passed away in 2019 before this project could come to fruition. Jaswant Singh Gill (22 November 1939 – 26 November 2019) was an Indian engineer at Coal India known for his efforts in rescuing 65 coal miners trapped in a flooded mine in Raniganj, West Bengal, in 1989.

Early life and education[edit | edit source]

Gill was born on 22 November 1939 in Sathiala, Amritsar, Punjab, India.[2] He completed his early education at an Urdu School in Amritsar and later attended Khalsa College School. He pursued a B.Sc. (non-medical) from Khalsa College, Amritsar in 1959, and graduated in Mining Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad, Jharkhand in 1965.[3]

After completing his education, Gill started working for Chand Thapar & Bros (coal Sales) Limited in 1965 and later joined Coal India Limited in 1973.[4] He was known for his innovative approach and dedication to mining safety.[5]

1989 Raniganj rescue operation[edit | edit source]

On night of 13 November 1989 during a time blast at the Mahabir Colliery, Burdwan (Raniganj) in West Bengal a sudden flood trapped 71 miners in an underground mine (below 350 ft ground level).[6][7][8]

Gill was serving as the additional chief mining engineer at Chitra Mines but voluntarily reached the Raniganj coal mine and led a daring rescue operation which started early morning on 16 November 1989 at 2:30 AM and continued for 6 hours, he successfully rescued 65 miners.[9][10] He devised a plan to construct a steel capsule to transport miners to safety one by one.[11]

I believe that in a time of calamity, one doesn't have the time to be afraid. One has to act.[12]

His efforts were recognized with the prestigious 'Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak' by then-President of India, Ramaswamy Venkataraman, in 1991.[13][14][15]

Post retirement[edit | edit source]

Gill retired from Coal India in 1998 at the age of 60. In 2008, he was appointed as a member in Disaster management committee at Amritsar, Punjab (India).[16]Template:Better citation needed

2018 Meghalaya rescue operation[edit | edit source]

Gill was invited during 2018 Meghalaya mining accident by Conrad Sangma, 12th Chief Minister of Meghalaya due to his expertise in mine mishaps for a rescue operation held in December 2018 at East Jaintia hills, Meghalaya, India.[17][18][19] Gill suggested Meghalaya state government to take help from Coal India.[20][21]

Gill was married to Nirdosh Kaur, and they had two sons and two daughters (Poonam Gill and Hina Gill).His best friend in early days was chandra Dev Mishra from Nirsa[22][23] His elder son, Sarpreet Singh Gill is a cardiologist from Johns Hopkins University who returned to Amritsar in 2008, and his younger son, Randip Singh Gill, is an entrepreneur and real estate professional in Vancouver, Canada.[24]

Gill died on 26 November 2019 due to cardiac arrest at his home in Amritsar, Punjab.[25][22]
