Uncho Parvat, Undi Khin is a biographical play by Dhirubhai Thaker based on life of Manilal Dwivedi. It was published in 1993.[1]

Origin[edit]

Thaker writes in preface, "I was well versed in facts of Manilal's public and private life, his thoughts and ideals. But while writing the play, I experienced that it is very difficult to convert all these things in a hearty play by capturing theatrical moments. It was published in 1993.[1][2]

The play was staged under direction of Janak Dave who had made some changes for stage production.[1]

Content[edit]

The play is based on life of Manilal Dwivedi and features narration. The playwright has also used the works including poems and ghazals by Manilal in the play.[1]

Reception[edit]

The play was chosen for the prize among 11 plays nominated for the play prize by Batubhai Umarvadiya Trust.[1] Critic Vinod Ardhvaryu writes, "As Dhirubhai has researched Manilal Dwivedi's literature very deeply, the play is accurate and true in its details".[2] On 28 July 1992, theatre critic S. D. Desai wrote in The Times of India that the play lacks the central conflict, dialogues are verbose while the plot is 'episodic'. Hasmukh Baradi praised the play and wrote, "Uncho Parvat, Undi Khin is the special native play of Gujarati dramaturgy which follows our native theatrical systems as well as present these traditions in a modernised way".[1]
