"The church's establishment has been the subject of a myth that it was built to suit the convenience of the Governor of Bombay, Mountstuart Elphinstone, who reportedly had to earlier travel from his central Bombay residence in Parel to St Thomas Cathedral in South Bombay.[1] Elphinstone had already left India in 1829.[2] The church was, in fact, built during the governorship of John FitzGibbon, 2nd Earl of Clare, who laid the foundation stone in July, 1832." The evidence is too flimsy to use the strong word myth.Plans for construction of such a structure take time and it could be possible that Elphinstone planned and proposed the construction of the church, but left before the plans reached fruition. This is also because later accounts show that it became the church for Sunday Service for the Governor. See Viscountess Falkland, wife of Governor Falkland's book Chow Chow on page 15, where she refers to her seeing the punkah wallas standing outside the church and thinking that, " curiosity, perhaps, had attracted them to see the 'Governor Sahib* attend his place of worship."
