Taarzan: The Wonder Car is a 2004 Indian fantasy action thriller film directed by Abbas Burmawalla and Mustan Burmawalla. The film stars Ajay Devgn, Vatsal Sheth and Ayesha Takia in the lead roles, while Farida Jalal, Pankaj Dheer, Sadashiv Amrapurkar, Amrish Puri, Shakti Kapoor, Gulshan Grover and Mukesh Tiwari play supporting roles. Upon release, the film was a box office disaster. However over the years, it has become a cult classic. It is loosely based on the American film Christine (1983),[3]
Ayesha Takia won the Filmfare Best Debut Award for her part in the movie. The car was designed by Dilip Chhabria and was called DC.
Plot[edit | edit source]
In 1992, Deven Chaudhary (Ajay Devgn) lives with his mother Lata (Farida Jalal) and 10-year-old son Raj. Deven spends considerable time designing the perfect car, calling it DC. It is very futuristic and more advanced than any other car in the market and registering its patent. The SUV car is said to have 400BHP and 500NM of torque, as well as making it from 0-60 in 5.2 seconds.
He also looks after an older Morris Minor MM handed over to him by his late father and calls it "Taarzan", based on the car’s mirror ornament of the Disney character Tarzan. Deven meets Rakesh Kapoor (Pankaj Dheer) and his partners, who praise his design but decline the deal as they don't want to give royalty as part of the deal.
Later, Deven finds that Rakesh and his partners conned him and registered his design under their name. He reports this to Inspector Sanjay Sharma (Deepak Shirke), who is actually on Rakesh's payroll. He, along with Rakesh and his cronies, attack and lock Deven in his car. The car is pushed into a river, causing a gagged Deven to die. Unaware of the truth behind his death, Lata decides to bring up Raj alone.
12 years later[edit | edit source]
In 2004, Raj (Vatsal Sheth) is now a 22-year-old boy living with Lata. On the first day of his new college, he falls in love with a rich girl, Priya (Ayesha Takia), who later also feels the same for him. Raj now works in a garage as a part-time mechanic. One day, he discovers and recognizes Taarzan immediately. He somehow pools money and buys it at 5000 rupees.
Raj wants to update the car that reminds him of Deven. Little does he know that, he has also brought back Deven, whose soul is trapped inside the car. Raj's boss Kartar aides him in repairing Taarzan. It is totally revamped into a car more advanced than Deven's design, and Raj decides to rename it DC to honor Deven's memory.
Here, Deven's spirit possesses Taarzan and kills Rakesh's cronies Kailash, Anthony and Mahesh, as well as Sanjay, as all of them, were behind his murder. Since the car belongs to Raj, he becomes a suspect in the eyes of Inspector Khurana (Gulshan Grover), the investigating officer. Rakesh returns to India and learns all his partners have died.
Rakesh is revealed to be Priya's father and meets Raj on her insistence. After knowing Raj is Deven's son, Rakesh assumes that Raj has found the truth and is using Priya as a pawn. He decides to kill Raj and take Priya back with him to London and get Priya married to a man of his choice. Raj is shocked as Rakesh tells him the truth about Deven's death. Deven's spirit now is visible to everyone.
In front of Rakesh's disbelieving eyes, Deven saves Raj. Terrified, Rakesh confesses his crime in front of everyone. Khurana arrests Rakesh; Deven says his last goodbye to Lata and Raj. With Raj, Lata and Priya united, Deven's spirit becomes free, and he ascends to heaven. Raj and Priya live a happy life afterward.
