Syed Ammal Arts and Science College is run by the Syed Ammal Educational Trust established by the father of Ramanathapuram.[1] Dr. E. M. Abdullah in the name of his beloved mother Syed Ammal. He was a famous doctor, a well-known philanthropist and a social worker. E. M. Abdullah was deeply interested in nation building activities such as providing medical assistance and uplifting the educational status of the poor and down trodden people of this backward district. For this purpose, he has started the Syed Ammal High School in 1964 and it was upgraded to higher secondary school. More over in order to ameliorate the standard of English knowledge to the weaker sections of this area, he has also started the Syed Ammal Matriculation School in 1976.

Following the path of Dr. Abdullah, the management committee has started Syed Ammal Arts and Science College in 2010 with a strength of 310 students in the vast area of about 56 acres (23 ha) on the east coast road between Ramanathapuram and Devipattinam. Now the strength is 2450 with 116 well experienced and qualified teachers. The college is a co-educational institution offering 15 under graduate courses and five post graduate courses. This institution has successfully completed nine years of excellent academic service.

The college is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC), New Delhi and affiliated to Alagappa University, Karaikudi.[2]
