He was appointed as president of Uttar Pradesh BJP on 16 July 2019.

Born in Ori village of Jamalpur Block in Mirzapur district of UP, Singh has been known for working in the Orai, Jalaun district of Bundelkhand.

Singh, who comes from a family with no political background, was the first person in his family to join RSS and subsequently join BJP.

Early life[edit]

Singh was born in village-Ori, Jamalpur, Mirzapur (Uttar Pradesh) in a very humble family. He started his education from a primary school in his village Ori. He had great interest in sports and was the captain of his school's wrestling team.

He went on to get a degree of Bachelor of Science (BSc) from Bundelkhand University in Jhansi. During his college days he got connected with Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) which is a right-wing all India student organisation affiliated to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Swatantra Dev Singh started his journey as a reporter in one of the Hindi language daily newspaper prior to 1986 when he joined RSS as a Pracharak.

Political background[edit]

The journey of Swatantra Dev Singh started in 1986 when he joined RSS as a Pracharak. He started working at root level for the organisation. In 1988–99, Singh went on to become a member of Akhil Bhartiya Vidharthi Parishad (ABVP) and was made the General Secretary (Organisation) of the same. Due to his utmost diligence and continuous efforts he became a known face within the organisation. In 1991 he was made In-charge of the kanpur's unit of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) which is the youth wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

In 1994, Singh was made in-charge of Bundelkhand Yuva Morcha and remained in the post until he was selected General Secretary of the Yuva Morcha 1996. Observing his great organisational skills he was again rewarded with the same duty. Later, he was appointed as State President of BJP Yuva Morcha in 2001.

In the year 2004, he was elected as a Member of Legislative Council (MLC) in Uttar Pradesh and in the same year he was made the General Secretary of the BJP. Between the period of 2004 and 2017, he was made the General Secretary thrice and Vice-President once. Him continuously having some responsibility or other in the party's organisation reflects his dedication and hard work.

He gained massive popularity when he was made main strategist and in-charge of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's political rallies in UP and Bihar during 2014 Lok Sabha elections. He managed huge political rallies with ease and the top leadership was always satisfied with his results.

Swatantra Dev Singh was former Transport Minister with Independent Charge in Yogi Adityanath government after the BJP was elected with a huge margin in 2017 state assembly elections.[2] Singh made his presence felt during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections when he was made incharge of the party affairs in Madhya Pradesh. The party swept the polls winning 28 out of the 29 Lok Sabha seats.

Swatantra Dev Singh was appointed as the BJP UP State President on 16 July 2019 by the top leadership.
