Swarajyarakshak Sambhaji is an Indian historical drama based on the life of Sambhaji. The series is directed by Vivek Deshpande and Kartik Rajaram Kendhe and is written by Pratap Gangavane. It is produced by Amol Kolhe, Vilas Sawant and Sonali Ghanashyam Rao under the banner of Jagadamb Creations.[1] It premiered from 24 September 2017[2] and concluded on 29 February 2020 on Zee Marathi.[3]

Plot[edit]

Sambhaji, Shivaji’s son, grows to become a Maratha Chhatrapati. He becomes a warrior who fought for Swarajya (self rule) throughout his lifespan of 31 years. He lost his mother at the age of 2, but he grew up under the influence of his grandmother Jijabai. His battle of Swarajya started when he met Mirza Raje that time he was only 9. At the age of 9, Sambhaji Raje shocked Aurangzeb at his palace in Agra. After escaping from Agra, Sambhaji Raje traveled from Mathura to Raigad on his own. After that Sambhaji Raje married to Jivubai; per Maratha custom she took the name Yesubai.

After 10 Years[edit]

Sambhaji Raje becomes the prince of Swarajya and post Rajaram I's birth family disputes begins to rise within the empire. Corrupt stewards in the empire Pushed Rajmata Soyarabai towards her motherhood. Sambhaji raje's life becomes full with accusations and insults. After the death of Shivaji, Annaji Datto Sachiv and other ministers conspired against Sambhaji Raje, supported by Rajmata Soyarabai, to prevent Sambhaji Raje from succeeding the throne. Sambhaji Raje lost their Swarajya. In the midst of this family issues outsiders such as Adilshah, Siddi, Portuguese, British; all of them became empires fierce enemies. Sambhaji Raje and Kavi Kalash captured by Aurangzeb taken to Bahadurgad, where Aurangzeb humiliated them by parading them wearing clown's clothes and they were subjected to insults by Mughal soldiers. After that, Aurangzeb ordered Sambhaji Raje and Kavi Kalash to be tortured to death; the process took over a fortnight and included plucking out their eyes and tongue, pulling out their nails and removing their skin. Sambhaji Raje was finally killed on 11 March 1689.

Production[edit]

The lead actor Amol Kolhe who played the role of Sambhaji Raje won the special best actor award in Zee Marathi Awards 2018.[5] The show completed more than 770 episodes and concluded on 29 February 2020.[6][7]

Reception[edit]

The series premiered on 24 September 2017 from Monday to Saturday at 9 pm by replacing Kahe Diya Pardes.[9] It always maintained its position in Top 5 Marathi TV shows.[10][11]
